2025 Fantasy Outlook
McNeill was having a rather productive season in 2024 before suffering a season-ending torn ACL in Week 15 against the Bills. The defensive tackle compiled 25 total tackles, including 3.5 sacks, while also adding a forced fumble and a pass defense over 14 regular-season games. With the team's linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard being promoted to defensive coordinator, replacing Aaron Glenn, the scheme will be similar this year. Once he's healthy, McNeill likely will be the Lions' top option at interior defensive line, leading a group that includes vet DJ Reader and rookie first-round pick Tyleik Williams. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
McNeill had his 21-day window to be reinstated from the reserve/PUP list opened Oct. 1, but he was not cleared to play against the Bengals in Week 5. He's opened the week with a full practice, and if he can participate without restriction in each of the next two days, he would put himself in good position to make his 2025 debut against the Chiefs on Sunday. The 2021 third-rounder is in the final stages of his recovery from a torn ACL in his right knee that he suffered in December.

2021
McNeill compiled 32 total tackles, including a career-high 5.0 sacks, while appearing in 13 regular-season games with the Lions in 2023 and figures to be a force on the interior defensive line again in 2024.
After handling around 400 snaps as a rookie, McNeill started all 17 games for Detroit last year, but he didn't see much improvement in his counting stats despite doubling his snap count. However, the 2021 third-round pick - who entered the league at 325 pounds - has reportedly cut around 13 percent of his body fat in advance of the 2023 campaign. The hope is this significant body transformation will make McNeill a more explosive player in the middle of the Detroit defense.
McNeill had a promising rookie season as a key rotational player at nose tackle. With Detroit's move back to a 4-3 alignment in 2022, McNeill should easily clear the 405 defensive snaps he saw as a rookie -- and subsequently a good bet to top the 15 tackles and two sacks he notched over 17 games.
A third-round draft pick out of NC State, McNeill has a solid chance of securing the starting job at nose tackle in Detroit as a rookie.

Extension talks underway
DTDetroit Lions
September 2, 2024
McNeill and the Lions have begun preliminary discussions regarding a contract extension, Jared Ramsey of the Detroit Free Press reports. "We haven't had anything intense going on from a dialogue standpoint, but his camp knows that we want to get something done," Detroit general manager Brad Holmes said late last week. "But, it's very in the infancy stage right now."
ANALYSIS
McNeill is heading into the final season of his rookie deal after being a third-round pick in 2021, and the North Carolina State product has gotten better every year. After recording a career-high 5.0 sacks last year in 13 regular-season games, the defensive tackle may not have hit his ceiling. The Lions have made locking up their core a priority, having already signed Amon-Ra St. Brown, Penei Sewell and others to extensions this offseason, and McNeill appears to be next on the list.
