Competition arrives
Richardson (back) looks slated to spend the offseason in an open competition for the No. 1 quarterback spot with Daniel Jones, whom the Colts signed to a one-year contract Wednesday, Stephen Holder of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
General manager Chris Ballard has stated that Indianapolis will hold an open competition to determine a Week 1 starter for the 2025 campaign. That QB battle will take the form of Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, versus Jones, a 2019 first-rounder who started for New York until 2024, when he was benched and ultimately released. Richardson has struggled with both consistency and availability across two seasons in the NFL, having appeared in just four games as a rookie and 11 games in 2024, though he has displayed a higher potential ceiling than the more experienced Jones. Training camp and the preseason will prove pivotal for the careers of both Richardson and Jones, as the pair of signal-callers compete for one starting job.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Richardson’s rookie season earned an "incomplete" thanks to injuries, but his four-game debut showed glimpses of why the Colts made him the fourth overall pick in 2023. He suffered a bruised knee in Week 1, a concussion in Week 2 that also cost him the next game and a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 5 that required surgery. He showed off his big arm at times, though he didn’t throw deep a lot -- just 7.1 percent of his attempts went beyond 20 yards -- and his accuracy, while still a work in progress, wasn’t necessarily the Achilles' heel some expected. His running game is already top-tier, and he proved as elusive and powerful as advertised en route to 5.4 yards per rush (8th among QBs with at least 25 attempts) and four touchdowns. On 14 designed runs, he averaged a QB-high 7.0 yards per rush. The uber-athletic Richardson has an unprecedented size/speed combo -- 6-4, 244 with a 4.43 40 -- that should give him a solid fantasy floor while his passing develops. Coach Shane Steichen, who guided the development of Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia, will undoubtedly encourage Richardson to better protect himself, but the QB will still form a nasty two-headed rushing attack with RB Jonathan Taylor. WRs Michael Pittman, Josh Downs and Alec Pierce are reliable targets, and the team drafted 6-2 Adonai Mitchell, who has 4.34 speed, to give Richardson the deep threat he did not have last season. Better health might be all that's needed for Richardson to quickly jump into the top 5 of fantasy quarterbacks.

Will have to earn No. 1 spot
Richardson will have to compete with Daniel Jones -- who agreed to a one-year deal with the Colts on Tuesday -- for the starting quarterback job in training camp and the preseason, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Richardson has started the first two seasons of his career atop the depth chart, but those campaigns have been defined largely by injuries and highly inconsistent play. The 2023 fourth overall pick, who missed the final two games of the 2024 season due to a back injury, proved himself to be a lethal rushing threat with a 86-499-6 line in 11 games. However, he completed just 47.7 percent of his passes and threw for eight touchdowns against 12 interceptions.
