That didn't stop him from catching on with the Saints as an undrafted rookie last year, nor did it stop him from making six of nine kicks from 50-plus yards. He also made each of his 40 PATs, though shorter field goals were a problem area with Grupe missing two of 12 tries inside 30 yards. He tied for eighth among kickers in fantasy scoring and figures to remain the Saints' starter in 2024, with potential benefits including home games played in a dome and a head coach (Dennis Allen) who routinely ranks among the least aggressive in going for it on fourth down.

Grupe has been the presumed favorite to remain the Saints' kicker in 2024 after making 30 of 37 field-goal attempts as a rookie in 2023, but Smyth is apparently hanging around in the competition. Grupe has connected on all three of his field-goal attempts in preseason, but Smyth kicked the game-winning field goal against the Cardinals in the preseason opener and turned heads by hitting a 65-yard field goal in practice Tuesday.
