Donovan Wilson

Donovan Wilson

30-Year-Old SafetyS
Dallas Cowboys
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Wilson was on the field for a career-high 955 defensive snaps in 2024, though the results weren't particularly positive. He allowed opposing quarterbacks to post a whopping 141.6 rating when targeted, including 13.1 yards per reception and six touchdowns. His success in run defense wasn't much better, as his missed tackle rate spiked to 15.2 percent (per PFF) - the highest mark of his career since 2021. All of that suggests his job should be in jeopardy, but Dallas did little to reinforce their safety group this offseason. Wilson is the perfect example of the divergence that sometimes emerges between on-field performance and fantasy results, but IDP points should continue to roll in if Wilson remains on the field. Wilson started all 17 regular-season games this season and recorded 82 tackles (44 solo), including 4.5 sacks, five passes defensed, including one interception, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
ANALYSIS
The safety also played on at least 67 percent of the defensive snaps in every game and on more than 80 percent of the defensive snaps in 14 contests. Wilson, a 2019 sixth-round pick, now has three straight seasons of at least 80 tackles and multiple pass breakups and turnovers forced. After signing a three-year, $21-million extension with the Cowboys in 2023, he'll be entering a contract year in 2025.

2021
Wilson wasn't able to repeat his breakout 2022 campaign, but he still recorded 88 tackles and two interceptions in 15 games last season. He also failed to produce a sack after racking up 5.0 the year before. The 29-year-old thrived in Dan Quinn's scheme as a hybrid safety-linebacker, but new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer may not use him the same way, putting Wilson's IDP utility in question in 2024 even if he seems locked into a starting role for Dallas.
The 28-year-old rebounded from an injury-marred 2021 to become one of the pillars of the Cowboys secondary last season, topping 100 tackles for the first time in his four-year career and recording a career-high five sacks while playing in all 17 games. Wilson pairs strong tackling with good coverage skills, making him an outstanding fit for coordinator Dan Quinn's defense, and the safety was rewarded with a three-year contract this offseason worth up to $24 million. If he can stay healthy, Wilson again should post excellent IDP production in 2023.
Wilson came out of nowhere to be one of the top defensive back IDPs last year, taking over a starting role in Week 4 and posting strong production almost every week thereafter. By the time the year ended Wilson made a major impact across all categories, producing not just 71 tackles on 671 snaps, but also standout production with sacks, interceptions and fumbles. Dallas didn't add any obvious competition at safety in the offseason, so Wilson seems headed for a three-down role again in 2021, and with that he should safely qualify as a DB1.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Unlikely to stay put
SDallas Cowboys
March 4, 2023
According to Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, there isn't much optimism that Wilson and the Cowboys will agree to a contract extension.
ANALYSIS
Wilson started all 17 games for the Cowboys in 2022, but his asking price may be beyond what the team is willing to offer, especially with Dallas also attempting to re-sign a few key free agents at other positions. If Wilson walks away in free agency, Dallas would still have a combination of Jayron Kearse, Israel Mukuamu and Malik Hooker -- who's recovering from thumb surgery -- available at safety.
