2024 Fantasy Outlook
Mitchell caught two passes for 28 yards over 15 contests with the Lions in 2023, and he'll enter this season as the team's third option at tight end behind Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright. Heading into his third year in Detroit after the team selected him in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Mitchell has operated pretty much exclusively as a run blocker and special-teams asset for the team. It's unlikely that there will be much of an opportunity for him to carve out a significant role on the Lions offense this season, barring an injury to either LaPorta or Wright. Read Past Outlooks

Mitchell reverted to the Lions' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
The third-year pro was elevated to Detroit's active roster ahead of the Week 11 win over the Jaguars to ensure depth at tight end with Sam LaPorta (shoulder) ruled out. Mitchell ended up seeing increased time after Shane Zylstra sustained a neck injury in Sunday's win, playing 24 offensive snaps but failing to record a stat. He could be elevated to the Lions' active roster again before the team's Week 12 matchup against the Colts if LaPorta or Zylstra cannot suit up.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Mitchell's chances of making a second-year jump took a massive hit when Detroit spent a high second-round pick on rookie Sam LaPorta, who has been seeing the majority of snaps with the first-team offense during training camp. Meanwhile, incumbent starter Brock Wright is back as an effective blocker while the versatile Mitchell - who was used on the line, out wide, and in the backfield during his time at Virginia Tech - seems set to serve as a versatile No. 3 option.
Some say Mitchell was a steal as a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. After emerging as a big-play threat as a sophomore at Virginia Tech and averaging over 17 yards per catch in 2019 and 2020, the 6-4 tight end missed most of the 2021 season due to a torn ACL. However, he should be healthy well before the start of training camp, and he'll have a great opportunity in Detroit. Slotting on the depth chart under T.J. Hockenson is uncertain, but neither Garrett Griffin nor Brock Wright seem to possess the athleticism or receiving chops that Mitchell does. Hockenson's blocking struggles likely mean that Mitchell will have to impress as an in-line tight end if he is to see consistent offensive snaps during his rookie year.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Ready for bigger role
TEDetroit Lions
November 7, 2022
Mitchell could see a significant role in the Detroit offense during the second half of the season after T.J. Hockenson was traded to the Vikings, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
A fifth-round pick in the 2022 Draft, Mitchell likely would have been selected higher if it weren't for an ACL injury that cut short his final year at Virginia Tech. The rookie caught his first career NFL touchdown Sunday against the Packers, and while more experienced tight ends Brock Wright and Shane Zylstra saw a bigger workload in the game, Mitchell offers the most upside of the three as a receiver.
