2022 Fantasy Outlook
Williams bounced between Washington's practice squad and active roster last year, and he also had a brief stint with the division-rival Giants in the middle. Rookie Jaret Patterson saw more work than Williams when starter Antonio Gibson missed time, and the Commanders now added third-round pick Brian Robinson to put another body potentially ahead of Williams. The Commanders signed Williams to a one-year contract extension Friday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams appeared in a career-high 13 games in 2022, his second season with Washington, and compiled 44 touches for 192 yards but failed to find the end zone. With Antonio Gibson (foot) and Brian Robinson (knee) out to end the year, Williams totaled 23 rushing attempts for 62 yards across 61 offensive snaps in Weeks 17 and 18. With Gibson and Robinson both still on their rookie deals in 2023, Williams figures to garner a similar depth role next season and will remain on the outskirts of fantasy relevancy.

Despite popping for a pair of 100-yard games with the Colts in 2019, Williams was cut in mid-August as Indianapolis moves forward with a backfield led by Marlon Mack, Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines. Williams now finds himself in an oddly similar situation in Detroit behind Kerryon Johnson, D'Andre Swift and Jason Huntley, which should again make it hard for him to surface on the fantasy radar, barring an injury to someone ahead of him on the depth chart.
Williams, who has logged just three carries over the past two seasons, will look to stick as a depth back with the Colts, though the 2016 fifth-rounder figures to face an uphill battle on that front, now that Spencer Ware has joined the team's running back corps.
Williams was expected to serve as LeSean McCoy's primary backup in Buffalo in 2017, but he was a surprise cut in early September. Before signing with the Saints last November, the bruising 6-0, 223-pound back spent nearly the entire season on the Broncos' practice squad. Entering his third NFL campaign, Williams is now looking for work after being a surprise cut by the Saints.
Mike Gillislee's defection to the Patriots and the Bills' decision not to draft another running back seemingly left the door open for Williams to be LeSean McCoy's primary backup in 2017, but he was let go by Buffalo in early September. The 5-11, 223-pound bruiser out of Arkansas saw limited duty as a rookie last year, mainly being used as a short-yardage option, but he has the skills to potentially be effective in any situation, as he showed surprising elusiveness and soft hands in college as well as the patience to let holes develop.
Williams earned a bit of playing time at the University of Arkansas as a true freshman, and then shared the backfield with Alex Collins in 2013 and 2014, with both players enjoying sustained success. Seemingly headed for the early to middle rounds, Williams missed his entire senior year with a foot injury, causing him to slip to the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He proved his health by running a 4.59 40-yard dash at his pro day - a solid time for a player listed at 6-0, 223 pounds. The Bills may have gotten a steal in the fifth round, but even if Williams has starter potential down the line, he'll likely open the season fourth on the depth chart, behind LeSean McCoy, Mike Gillislee and Reggie Bush.
