2023 Fantasy Outlook
Commanding over half of the defensive snaps from Week 1 as a rookie, Rodriguez fared about as well as possible for a sixth-round draft pick last season. However, his game-by-game snap counts declined over the second half of the year, and the Lions not only signed Alex Anzalone to a significant extension this offseason, but they also spent a first-round pick on linebacker Jack Campbell. It remains to be seen how all of the pieces fit together, but Rodriguez figures to see a decent decline from his 554 defensive snaps in 2022. Read Past Outlooks

Large role reduction in 2023
LBDetroit Lions
February 27, 2024
Rodriguez recorded 22 tackles and one forced fumble over 17 regular-season games in 2023.
ANALYSIS
After logging 584 defensive snaps during his rookie year, Rodriguez was given just 115 of them in 2023 thanks to Derrick Barnes seeing an expanded role alongside Alex Anzalone, with first-round pick Jack Campbell joining the fold as well. Given that each of the three starting linebackers are under contract in 2024, Rodriguez does not have a clear path to a bigger role in the near term, let alone come anywhere close to the 87 tackles he registered in 2022.

Looking at reduced role in '23
LBDetroit Lions
August 3, 2023
Rodriguez, who started 15 games as a rookie sixth-round pick in 2022, doesn't appear to have a good chance of reprising that slotting in the coming season, Eric Edholm of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Oklahoma State product has been primarily running with the second-team defense during training camp, but that's not the only ominous sign Edholm cites for his prediction. Despite finishing third on the Lions in tackles last season, Rodriguez now has rookie 18th-overall pick Jack Campbell working in front of him. Meanwhile, third-year pro Derrick Barnes, whose already shown promise over his first pair of seasons, is looking even more improved thus far in camp. Factoring in Detroit favors plenty of two-linebacker alignments, and Rodriguez increasingly appears to be on the outside looking in.
