The Colts kept Gay busy after signing him to a big contract during the 2023 offseason, but he didn't exactly reward them, missing half of his attempts from 50-plus yards (11-of-22) en route to an 82.1 field-goal percentage overall. He missed just one PAT and three field-goal attempts inside of 50 yards, but that ultimately wasn't enough to justify his salary, so the Colts released him in April. The Commanders then signed Gay to a one-year, $4.25 million contract and released fellow kicker Zane Gonzalez, setting up Gay in what should be a high-volume role for a team that scored the fifth most points in the league last season. Gay stepped in as the 49ers' kicker for the team's last two games while Eddy Pineiro (hamstring) was sidelined and went a perfect 8-for-8 on kicks (four field goals, four extra points). The 49ers' decision to part ways with Gay signals that Pineiro is healthy coming out of the team's Week 14 bye and ready to handle kicking duties Sunday versus the Titans.

Gay cashed in big after his impressive showings for the Rams in 2021 (94.1 FG percentage) and 2022 (93.3 percent), signing a four-year contract with the Colts last spring that made him the second-highest-paid kicker in terms of average annual value. He ended up tying for second among kickers in fantasy points thanks to his 41 field-goal attempts (second most), but he also had the second most FG misses (eight). To be fair, five of those misses came from 50-plus yards, and Gay also had eight makes in that range, making him more of a slight disappointment than a disaster. The contract should give him job security for 2024, and there's a chance for the Colts offense to take a big step forward with second-year QB Anthony Richardson at the helm.

Even though Pineiro has an extra day to recover, Gay will likely get a chance to make his 49ers debut against the Panthers on Monday Night Football in Week 12.
