Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said "I feel good about that, yeah" when asked Wednesday whether he expects Parsons (back) to suit up Week 1 against the Eagles, with or without a new deal, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Parsons has officially been held out of practice since the start of training camp, though it seems the largest roadblock to the star pass rusher taking the field for Dallas remains his lack of a new long-term deal. His dissatisfaction with the absence of progress in contract talks resulted in a trade request made Aug. 1. If no extension is reached, Parsons will be set to play out the 2025 campaign on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal, which carries a $24 million contract. Schottenheimer's willingness to express optimism Wednesday could be a sign that contract negotiations are beginning to move forward.

Parsons set a new career high with 14.0 sacks last year, but he's been arguably the most consistent pass rusher in the NFL since being drafted 12th overall in 2021, producing 13.0 sacks as a rookie and 13.5 in 2022. Former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn lined him up all over the field looking for mismatches, but it's not yet clear how new DC Mike Zimmer plans to deploy Parsons, or whether the scheme change will have an impact on his numbers. The 25-year-old edge rusher's elite athleticism should allow him to thrive no matter how he's used, however.
Since being selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Parsons has emerged as one of the most dynamic defensive players in the league, racking up 26.5 sacks in his first 33 games for Dallas without even being a full-time pass rusher. Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn sees the value in keeping offenses guessing by lining Parsons up all over the formation and using him in different roles, and while that makes the 24-year-old's ultimate statistical output tough to predict, his main job for the Cowboys will still be to terrorize quarterbacks.
There’s no comparison to the uniqueness and profound talent Parsons brings to the field, and it’s tough to project the specifics of his future since he can dominate in so many ways. The area of eventual focus is what will determine his IDP upside – more off-ball work means more tackles, so the more Parsons rushes the passer the less likely he is to rank at the top of IDP linebackers.
The 11th overall pick in the 2020 draft, Parsons graded as the top defensive player in the entire class on some boards. His sideline-to-sideline speed and burst to the ball are elite, giving him massive IDP upside as a tackle vacuum who also can rush the passer and handle coverage assignments. While he needs to refine his reads and positioning and learn when to lay back rather than be in all-out attack mode, physically there's little Parsons can't do on the field. The only thing standing between him and huge numbers as a rookie might be the competition for snaps from holdovers Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
HC expects him Week 1
LBDallas Cowboys
August 20, 2025
Despite no evident progress on a contract extension, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Wednesday he expects to have Parsons on the field for the Week 1 matchup against the Eagles, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Whether it's a sincere belief on the part of the first-year head coach or simply a bit of wishful thinking, Schottenheimer did emphasize to reporters that he felt "good that Micah's going to be out there against the Philadelphia Eagles." Parsons hasn't participated in any practices since the start of training camp, but Schottenheimer also mentioned he had full confidence in the star edge rusher being able to play with limited practice time because "he takes great care of his body," adding that he had faith in the team's training and strength and conditioning staffs to get Parsons ready under such circumstances.
