Tyquan Thornton

23-Year-Old Wide ReceiverWR
New England Patriots
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Over the first two years of his pro career, Thornton, a 2022 second-rounder, has had trouble staying on the field and been limited to 35 catches in 22 contests in that span. With an eye toward holding up better, the 6-2, 185-pound wide receiver has sought to bulk up ahead of this coming season. Thornton's speed remains his calling card, and that's what could help him stick around if he has a strong summer under the tutelage of new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. On the plus side, Thornton - who turns 24 in August - figures to have a clean slate with the team's new coaching staff, but the Baylor product has plenty of competition for targets in a crowded wideout corps that lacks a clear pecking order ahead of training camp. With the Patriots having selected two wide receivers in the 2024 NFL Draft, Thornton's standing on the team's depth chart is unclear ahead of training camp, per Chad Graff of the Athletic.
ANALYSIS
In his post-draft roster assessment, Graff suggests that Thornton, who is presumably past the ankle issue that sidelined him in the Patriots' 2023 regular-season finale, isn't a roster lock ahead of Week 1. Over the first two years of his pro career, the 2022 second-rounder has had trouble staying on the field and has been limited to 35 catches in 22 contests in that span. While Thornton's speed could help him stick around if he has a strong summer, for now he currently has Kendrick Bourne, Ja'Lynn Polk, Demario Douglas, Javon Baker, K.J. Osborn, Jalen Reagor, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Kayshon Boutte to contend with for depth chart slotting.

Likely on wrong side of bubble
WRNew England Patriots
June 12, 2024
Thornton is fighting an uphill battle to make New England's roster, per Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site.
ANALYSIS
Thornton has struggled to find consistency across his first two seasons in the NFL, producing only 35 catches for 338 yards and two touchdowns in 22 games since the Patriots selected him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. That inconsistency has manifested early in minicamp through drops and miscommunications with quarterbacks. Due to those shortcomings, Thornton appears to be bringing up the rear in a wide-receiver camp competition that includes second-year pass catchers Demario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte and rookies Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker, as well as veteran options in JuJu Smith-Schuster, K.J. Osborn, Jalen Reagor and Kendrick Bourne.

The Patriots traded up for Thornton in the second round of the 2022 Draft, but he was largely a complementary piece in New England's receiving corps as a rookie, with Jakobi Meyers, DeVante Parker, Kendrick Bourne and Nelson Agholor also in the mix. Now that Meyers (Las Vegas) and Agholor (Baltimore) are elsewhere, Thornton should improve on last year's numbers - 22-247-2 line on 45 targets in 13 games - given the likelihood that he'll see increased volume alongside the two key holdovers and newcomer JuJu Smith-Schuster. Thornton has a slight frame at 6-2, 182 pounds, but he recorded a 4.28-second 40-yard dash during last year's combine, and with wheels like that, he has a chance to make his mark as a deep threat in 2023.
New England moved up in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft to take Thornton 50th overall. Though some thought that may have been a reach, there's no question the Patriots landed one of the fastest players in his draft class. Thornton, whom the Patriots list at 6-2, 182 pounds, logged an official 4.28-second 40-yard dash, and on top of that he was a convincingly productive player in college. He reportedly did solid work at his first training camp, but then suffered a collarbone injury in the preseason and is now expected to miss at least the first month and a half of the regular season. Once he's ready, Thornton could work as an occasional deep threat off the bench, or perhaps be more than that if the Patriots' veteran wideouts are injured/ineffective.
