2018 Dollar Values: RotoWire Staff Auction Results

For those of you who have a golf auction and bid a fixed budget on your golfers, the following is meant to be a guide.

These are the actual dollar values from our RotoWire staff golf league, which took place on Jan. 7. Our rules base winners on total earnings in PGA Tournaments from the Sony Open to the final FedExCup event (we skipped the Tournament of Champions due to scheduling conflicts for the draft and also didn't use the fall portion of the 2017-18 wrap-around schedule), excluding those PGA Tour events held the same week as the World Golf Championship tournaments and the British Open.

Our format also includes bonus points for the four majors. As a result, some European players may be ranked higher than your league. If a European golfer plays in just the four majors and WGC tournaments, he'll still have a lot of value in our league. Our league had 14 members, a budget of $100 per team and each team starts five golfers per week with a total roster of nine golfers. The league has been around since 2000.

After some years where the top golfer would go for $70 or more, the auction has been more diverse the past few seasons. Still, a clear top group has emerged.

The 2017 auction was balanced at the top with Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson going for between $61 and $66.

The 2017 auction was balanced at the top with Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson going for between $61 and $66.

The 2018 auction has Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth at the top, but Jon Rahm joins the duo as $60 or more players. Familiar faces Hideki Matsuyama (6th last year) and Rickie Fowler (8th last year) round out the top five.

I had a strategy to take several prominent European Tour golfers moving to the PGA Tour on a full-time basis (Tommy Fleetwood, Alex Noren, Thomas Pieters) hoping they'll exceed expectations along with some underperformers from last year still in the prime of their career (Jason Day).

Among some notable prices in our auction included Tiger Woods $7 (he went for $15 last year, so our league may be hesitant about his latest comeback). Notable sleepers our league may have gone higher on than most included Tyrrell Hatton ($9), Peter Uihlein ($9) and Ollie Schniederjans ($11).

Golfers that our league may have been more bullish on than most included Tony Finau ($27) and Xander Schauffele ($16) and Stephan Jaeger ($3).

While these dollar values may not exactly fit your league's rules, this should be a good benchmark for your draft preparation.
