22-Year-Old Wide ReceiverWR
Los Angeles Chargers
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Johnston is the No. 1 WR prototype in this year's rookie class, while fellow first-rounders Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Jordan Addison and Zay Flowers lack ideal measurables. At 6-3, 208, Johnston put up a 40.5-inch vertical and 134-inch broad jump at the 2023 combine, later running a reported 4.50 40 at his pro day. That after totaling 634 yards in eight games as a sophomore and 1,069 yards in 14 games as a junior, albeit with a limited route tree and dependence on the deep ball. Fortunately for him, he landed with one of the better deep throwers in the league, though Justin Herbert's volume skewed toward the short passing game under former OC Joe Lombardi. New OC Kellen Moore typically had his offenses in Dallas move at a fast pace while taking plenty of shots downfield, and he may favor three-wide sets more than ever after the Chargers used the 21st overall pick on a talented receiver to join Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. It's a situation where Johnston merely profiles as the No. 3, which makes him unlikely to see more than 5-6 targets per game if Allen and Williams both stay healthy (which they didn't last season). Johnston and Joshua Palmer (knee) are the top wide receivers left on the Chargers after the team released Mike Williams (knee) and traded Keenan Allen to Chicago.
ANALYSIS
The 2023 first-round pick should have every chance to earn a starting job even if the Chargers end up bringing in another wide receiver via an early pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The lack of target competition is promising for fantasy purposes, while Johnston's rookie-year performance and new coaching staff are considerably less promising. Jim Harbaugh and OC Greg Roman are known for prioritizing the running game, and the team's willingness to move on from both Allen and Williams further hint at that being the plan in Los Angeles despite having QB Justin Herbert under contract long term. Johnston said earlier this offseason that he expects a "breakout" under Harbaugh, after managing just 431 yards in 17 games as a rookie.

Bounce-back candidate for 2024
WRLos Angeles Chargers
February 17, 2024
Gilberto Manzano of SI.com believes that Johnston, whose production last season was not as high as the other receivers selected in the 2023 NFL Draft, should be poised for a better 2024 season.
ANALYSIS
When Mike Williams tore his ACL in Week 3, many believed it would provide Johnston the opportunity to step into a bigger role in the offense. The 2023 first-round pick out of TCU made 10 starts and played 40-plus offensive snaps in 10 of the last 11 contests of the regular season. That did not translate into on-field production, however, as Johnston finished the season with 38 catches on 67 targets for 431 yards and two touchdowns, far behind rookie counterparts like Zay Flowers, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Jordan Addison and 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year Puka Nacua. If the Chargers elect to cut Williams in the offseason, Johnston has a chance to establish himself as a go-to target for Justin Herbert for 2024.
