2024 Fantasy Outlook
Long upped his events played by 10 in 2022-23, but it didn't result in an improvement in play as he finished with eight fewer top-25 finishes and lowered his cuts-made percentage from 64.3 to 52.6 percent. Long is below average in SG: Off-the-Tee and one of the worst on Tour in SG: Approach to Green, though he makes up for it with above average putting. Read Past Outlooks

Long improved on a forgetable 2020-21 season by finishing in the top-25 in more than one-third of his events, although none of them resulted in top-10s. It was in large part due to much improved putting (24th) while gaining strokes in every category. Long is never going to be the flashiest of fantasy picks, but he's a consistent option capable of being in the mix on shorter courses.
Long had a very nice start to the season with four top-11 finishes in the fall portion of the schedule, but ended up missing the cut in 16 of his 30 starts when it was all said and done. Long was also outside the top 160 in SG: total. It's hard to say where the 33-year-old might go from here, but he hasn't shown anything in 2021 to make you confident about his prospects for this season.
Long quietly followed up his rookie year on Tour with an impressive one in the 2019-20 season, with two-runner up finishes and his second-straight year qualifying for the BMW Championship. He seems too often be forgotten about as a late-bloomer, but Long is a steady iron player who also improved dramatically with the putter this year. Although his lack of distance makes it hard for him to compete on longer courses, he's a good streamer on courses that negate that and rely on precise approach play.
Although they were outshined by the mid-season rookie class this past season, the crop of rookies that began the 2018-2019 was actually pretty productive last season. Long was one of those rookies and although he missed a lot of cuts, he picked-up a win at the Desert Classic in January, which was more than enough to get him into the FedEx playoffs. It's not uncommon to see a rookie win early in the year and then get complacent and coast through the rest of the season. We can't be sure Long got complacent, but he certainly coasted throughout the remainder of the season. He'll obviously have to sharpen his game at the start of this season if he's to take the next step. For now, Long is too inconsistent to be of value in a salary cap league.
Long's five top-10s and 12 top-25s put him comfortably inside of the top-25 on the Web.com Tour's regular season money list in 2018. The 30-year-old ranked 16th in birdie average and 13th in GIR percentage while also finishing top-25 in scrambling. He's made just one career appearance at the PGA Tour level, missing the cut at the 2011 U.S. Open.
