U.S. Open bound
Koivun on Monday carded an eight-under 64 followed by a three-under 69 in Atlanta to earn a spot in the U.S. Open.
ANALYSIS
The Atlanta final qualifying site at Piedmont Driving Club hosted 83 participants with only five qualifying spots available. Koivun began his opening round going birdie, eagle to jump out to a quick three-under start. He finished his opening round with five more birdies to finish with an opening eight-under 64 to jump into contention for one of the five spots. Koivun continued his impressive play in his final round going out in five-under 31 to get to 13 under for the tournament. While he came in with two closing bogeys in his final three holes, he was able to hang on and qualify for this years U.S. Open by one shot. As the number one ranked amateur in the country, Koivun has already earned his PGA Tour card via PGA University Accelerated program. He has also backed up this ranking with an impressive sophomore campaign for the Auburn Tigers. In the 11 tournaments that Auburn's competed in this year, Koivun has individually finished in the top-five in eight of those tournaments, two of which were wins. He will bring an impressive SG: Total of 2.82 strokes to Oakmont CC for the U.S. Open.
