Weekly Fantasy Golf Preview: Procore Championship

Akshay Bhatia might not have made the Ryder Cup team, but Greg Vara thinks he will have plenty of motivation to do well at the Procore Championship this week.
Weekly Fantasy Golf Preview: Procore Championship

Procore Championship

Silverado Country Club
Napa, CA

The PGA Tour heads to Napa for another edition of the Procore Championship.

The fall season gets underway this week at the Procore Championship, but this doesn't feel like the start of the fall season at all, it's more like a prep for the Ryder Cup. For most of the American Ryder Cup team, that's exactly what it is, but for the other players in the field, it's business as usual.

What we have then is two battling factions, one trying to tune-up their games before the biggest exhibition in the sport and the other trying to make their mark in what's left in the 2025 season. It makes you wonder which side should fare better. On the one hand you have a small group of golfers, the better of the two groups, with not a ton of motivation to win this week, rather to just get their game ready for Bethpage in two weeks. On the other hand you have a group that is treating this week like any other week. There's really no pressure on the Ryder Cup players as those tickets are already punched, so does that help them this week? And what about the distraction of everyone looking two weeks ahead? I can't imagine any of the questions those guys will face this week will revolve around this event as opposed to the Ryder Cup, so how does that affect them?

While most of the attention will be on the Ryder Cup players, the majority of the field will be treating this like a normal fall event, but this isn't a normal fall event, fall events don't have loaded fields and this one does, so it's bound to have a feel of a regular season event.

However this one turns out, the golf fans are going to benefit because it's not often that we get a bunch of top-tier golfers showing up in the fall and with the Ryder Cup right around the corner, this one will have a different feel as well.

As for the event itself, the Procore has been held on the current track for the past 10 years, so we'll have plenty of course history for those regular fall players, for the Ryder Cup players, not so much.

Scottie Scheffler (+210)

There, not this feels like a normal tour stop with Scheffler on top of the odds chart. This will be Scheffler's first time at this event, but we all know that doesn't really carry any weight. Scheffler is clearly the best golfer in the world and the fact that he hasn't played this course matters not. Well, it might matter a little, but I'm sure he can overcome. Scheffler does have a couple things working against him this week though. First, I don't think motivation is a factor, distractions could certainly affect his game this week. The Ryder Cup is a big deal and a lot of focus will be on the Ryder Cup this week. Secondly, it's been a couple weeks since the end of the regular season, which is a grind near the end, so does he have the same fire coming into this week? I don't have the answers, but at this price, it's tough to take someone with numerous questions.

Russell Henley (16-1)

Here's a question that could be a potential problem for the Ryder Cup players – are they playing this course or are they tuning up parts of their game that will be needed at Bethpage? I guess that's not so much a literal question as a figurative question. It's not like their going to pull out a driver on a par-3 because they'll need to hit bombs at Bethpage, but mentally, will they be present or are they already looking ahead? I supposed it could be different for each guy, but something tells me that we aren't going to see all the Ryder Cup guys at the top of the leader board this week. As such, I'm fading most of them, at least to win.

Justin Thomas (16-1)

Now this one is an interesting case. On the one hand, Thomas is on the Ryder Cup team and could be distracted by what lies ahead, on the other hand, he's played this event, on this course, five times and has yet to finish outside the top-10. In fact, four of his top-10s are actually top-5s as well. He hasn't had the best season of the Ryder Cup players in the field , but he definitely has the best feel for the course, and while his game might not be exactly where it needs to be, I think Thomas has a shot at winning.

THE NEXT TIER

Maverick McNealy (25-1)

I mentioned earlier that I'm steering clear of the Ryder Cup players for the most part, so I might as well take a look at the guy who most felt was the biggest snub to make a statement this week. McNealy certainly had a case to make the team and I'm not going to get into that, but what I will say is that he probably feels slighted and now he has a chance to show Bradley that he messed up. Sure, a good showing this week doesn't mean he would have been a better pick, but I'm guessing that's not how McNealy sees it. As for his track record here, well, it's mostly bad, but he did finish T2 in 2018.

Akshay Bhatia (35-1)

Bhatia didn't really have a strong case to make the Ryder Cup team, he simply didn't play well enough from April through July this season, but he certainly has aspirations of making the team in two years. A strong showing could leave an impression as this week is all about the Ryder Cup. No, he's not going to make the team with a win, but a good showing couldn't hurt. Bhatia comes in with a little momentum as well after posting a top-10 at the St. Jude in early August and finishing in the top-half of the TOUR Championship field a few weeks ago.

Jackson Koivun (55-1)

It's probably too early to expect Koivun to post a win on the PGA Tour, especially against a field like this, but all signs point to him being a solid pro, and who knows, maybe he's a special player. His past three starts on the PGA Tour have resulted in nothing worse than a T11 and his most recent start resulted in a T5. While it might be premature for a wager like this, his odds aren't going to be this high for much longer, especially if he has any success during the fall.

LONG SHOTS

Nico Echavarria (100-1)

The first event of the fall season is always an interesting one because most of the field has been away from the game for at least a month. I bring this up because it's nearly impossible to tell who is in good form entering this week. If a golfer played well a month ago and that was his most recent event, is he in good form? In my mind, a month break resets everything. Echavarria wasn't at his best when we last saw him in early August, but he did catch fire at this time this past year and perhaps he'll do it again.

Sahith Theegala (125-1)

Based on 2025 form, Theegala has no shot to win this week, but strange things happen in the fall and he won this event in 2023. Look, I don't feel great about recommending a guy that played terribly for most of the year, but he's been off for a month now, so perhaps he's got some things worked out and returning to a site where he's won twice certainly can't hurt. He's 125-1 for a reason, but we all know he's better than what he's shown up to this point this season.

ONE-AND-DONE LEAGUES

Highly-Chosen Pick: Scottie Scheffler – Like in previous years, we'll be treating this section a little differently during the fall season in that we'll be resetting everything and not keeping track of the results. In other words, each week will be its own entity, the best options will appear each week regardless of if I've taken them already. For those playing in a OAD pool this fall, the best option this week is obviously Scheffler. Looking at the fall schedule, there doesn't appear to be any large purses, so even though this is a smaller purse, it matches up with others this fall. With that in mind, you might as well take Scheffler while he's locked-in.

Moderately-Chosen Pick: Maverick McNealy – McNealy probably has more motivation than anyone in the field this week and while that doesn't always translate to results, I have a feeling we'll see a good performance from him this week. I would expect a good effort the week after missing the Ryder Cup team no matter who was in the field, but the fact that most of the Ryder Cup players are in the field, should only fuel his fire.

Lightly-Chosen Pick: Nico Echavarria – Maybe Echavarria is a fall guy? You know, the type of golfer that just finds his groove every fall? Echavarria showed this past year that he's more than just a fall guy, but that doesn't preclude him from playing well in the fall, right? The only potential hiccup in the fall guy theory is that this isn't a normal fall field, but again, with his overall improvement this past year, I think he can handle a better field than he's used to seeing in the fall.

Buyer Beware: The Ryder Cup Players – I know I've said this a few times already, but it's going to be really tempting to take a big name this week, but most of these guys are already looking ahead. Scheffler is the exception because he's just a winning machine that loves the competition and loves the game, he's in play this week, but I would be wary of anyone else on Team USA this week.
