2025 Fantasy Outlook
It was a good year by any measure with win wins at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship in back-to-back starts, but it could have been a great year by McIlroy standards had a couple short putts gone in down the stretch at the U.S. Open. It's still a bit unfathomable that a player as great as McIlroy has not won a major since 2014, but here we are heading into 2025. The Northern Irishman was third in SG: Total in 2024 (+1.41), but significantly behind both Scottie Scheffler (+2.50) and Xander Schauffele (+1.94). You know he's going to be motivated to close that gap and prove why he still deserves to be the top player on the PGA Tour. To do that he will need to improve his iron play in which he ranked 55th in SG: Approach and 131st in GIR percentage, down from 8th and 79th in 2023, respectively. Read Past Outlooks
Notches seventh Race to Dubai title
McIlroy won the DP World Tour's Race to Dubai title for the seventh time following a playoff loss to Matt Fitzpatrick at the DP World Tour Championship on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
McIlroy was mainly concerned with where Marco Penge was this week, as he looked to wrap up another Race to Dubai title. With Penge not a factor at the Earth Course this week, McIlroy could lock in on trying to go for his fourth DP World Tour Championship win. McIlroy was in a share of the lead going into the final round. He started very strong with four birdies in the first seven holes. McIlroy would leak some oil on the back-nine with a pair of bogeys on 12 and 16, however. In a season full of great moments for the Northern Irishman, he added another one by making an eagle on the 72nd hole to force a playoff with Matt Fitzpatrick. Unfortunately, things did not go his way in the playoff as he would make bogey to Fitzpatrick's par. While it would have been nice to win the tournament this week, McIlroy's goal was to move into second all-time on the European Tour's Order of Merit winners. He could tie Colin Montgomerie with an eighth title next year.

After his initial victory at the CJ Cup in South Carolina to kick off the 2022-23 season, McIlroy faced early challenges in 2023 on the PGA Tour, with five finishes outside the top-25 over seven starts. However, the Northern Irishman hit his stride in the summer, securing 10 consecutive top-10 finishes to end the season, including a win at the Scottish Open. Statistically, McIlroy's performance was strong across all aspects of his game last season. The key for him is maintaining mental focus for four rounds, especially at majors, where he hasn't triumphed since 2014. Despite this, McIlroy's potential remains high, making him a top pick, though he tends to play fewer events than some other leading contenders. Given his caliber, a five-win 2024 season for the future Hall-of-Famer wouldn't be surprising at all.
