DraftKings NHL: Tuesday Breakdown

DraftKings NHL: Tuesday Breakdown

This article is part of our DraftKings NHL series.

Tuesday's NHL slate features 10 games after 7:00 p.m. EST. Below, you'll find a breakdown of the action and suggested options for crafting an effective lineup.

SLATE PREVIEW

The three most obvious teams to build around will be the Bruins (vs. Ottawa), Flames (vs. San Jose) and Oilers (in Detroit). Edmonton's game is doubly appealing due to its slate-high over/under of 6.5 goals. Penguins-Blackhawks is the only other game with an over/under higher than 5.5 goals at 6.0, so scoring will be at a premium in much of the action. With a number of pricey stars in favorable matchups, picking which ones to build around while finding the right supporting value options will be the keys to finding success.

GOALIES

Jeremy Swayman, BOS vs. OTT ($8,600): Swayman has started two home games this season, both times limiting the opposition to a single goal to come away with a win. Add those numbers to his 4-0-0 record and 0.98 GAA on home ice last season, and the young goalie has been as good as it gets at home. Boston is the largest favorite among the multitude of teams in action Tuesday, making Swayman the chalk play in net.

Jacob Markstrom, CGY vs. SJ ($8,500): Markstrom is the other obvious goalie play on home ice against a Sharks roster that remains depleted by a COVID-19 outbreak. Even if the Sharks were at full health, they would be fighting an uphill battle against the locked-in Swede, who has already notched four shutouts en route to a 5-1-3 record, 1.65 GAA and .942 save percentage.

Cal Petersen, LA at MON ($7,400): The Kings are playing their second game in as many nights, but they come into this one with plenty of momentum after Jonathan Quick presided over Monday's 5-1 win in Toronto. Petersen will get a far easier matchup against a 3-10-0 Montreal team that's averaging just 2.00 goals per game — second-fewest after the idle Coyotes.

Robin Lehner, VGK vs. SEA ($8,100): The Golden Knights appear to have finally turned the corner after a slow start, and Lehner has led the way. He has four wins in his last five outings and has set aside 74 of 77 shots in the last two for a .961 save percentage. Lehner should build on his recent success against a 4-7-1 Kraken team that suffered an embarrassing loss to the previously winless Coyotes last time out.

VALUE PLAYS/ONE-OFFS

Nicolas Roy, VGK vs. SEA ($3,500): Roy has a 1-4-5 line during his active three-game point streak and a 2-6-8 line in 10 games overall. Despite his scoring output and top-six role, the 24-year-old center can still be had for just $3,500 against a Kraken team that's allowing 3.33 goals per game. You'll be hard-pressed to find better value across this slate.

Johnny Gaudreau, CGY vs. SJ ($5,300): Gaudreau's an excellent value in the mid-tier price range. The former 99-point scorer finds himself on a 104-point pace thus far with a 4-10-14 line through 11 games. Johnny Hockey has five multi-point performances in his last 10 games while being held off the scoresheet only twice over that span. For some reason, Gaudreau's valuation is the lowest it has been all season at $5,300, even though he's coming off a two-goal, one-assist performance.

Troy Terry, ANH at VAN ($5,900): Terry has an 11-game point streak going, having compiled an 8-6-14 line over that stretch. Sure, this hot streak has to end at some point, but a Canucks team that has the league's most generous penalty kill (63.9 percent) is unlikely to slow down Terry, who leads the Ducks in power-play goals with three.

Evan Rodrigues, PIT at CHI ($3,800): Rodrigues has demonstrated a high floor while skating in a top-six role for the Penguins. His 3-4-7 line has him tied for the team points lead, and Rodrigues has added 30 shots on goal while posting at least 6.0 fantasy points in eight of 10 games. His early success should continue against a Blackhawks team that's allowing 3.69 goals per game — only idle Arizona gives up more.

Jesper Bratt, NJ vs. FLA ($3,600): Florida's finishing up a back-to-back set, and with Sergei Bobrovsky sidelined by an upper-body injury, the Panthers will likely start Christopher Gibson — who has a career 3.33 GAA and .901 save percentage — in net after Spencer Knight gave up four goals in Monday's loss to the Rangers. Bratt's poised to capitalize on Gibson's lackluster goaltending, as the affordable winger has compiled a 2-3-5 line and 14 shots over his past five games and is skating in a top-line role.

FORWARD LINE STACKS

Bruins vs. Senators

Patrice Bergeron (C - $7,400), David Pastrnak (W - $8,000), Brad Marchand (W - $7,400)

One of the best lines in hockey is set to continue its success against a visiting Senators team that's been outscored 40-28 en route to a 3-7-1 record. Marchand has been by far Boston's best player thus far, with a 4-10-14 line through nine games. Bergeron has actually pulled into a tie for the team goals lead with a 4-4-8 line thanks to a Nov. 4 four-goal performance against Detroit. Pastrnak's off to a slow start (3-3-6), but he easily leads the Bruins with 39 shots, and the career 14.1 percent shooter is unlikely to be stuck on 7.7 percent much longer.

Oilers at Red Wings

Connor McDavid (C - $9,200), Leon Draisaitl (W - $9,100), Jesse Puljujarvi (W - $5,100)

After skating on separate lines for a few games, McDavid and Draisaitl are back together on a super line, and paying up for at least one is recommended, though you'll need to gut the rest of your lineup to afford both. Draisaitl's 10-13-23 line through 10 games has him leading the league in points, with McDavid (8-14-22) hot on his heels. Barring injury, they'll likely continue to occupy the top two spots in the league scoring race. Puljujarvi has thrived on McDavid's wing all season, chipping in a 5-7-12 line that includes three goals in his last two games. The sky's the limit for this trio against a Red Wings team that's allowing 3.38 goals per game — sixth-most in the league.

Panthers at Devils

Aleksander Barkov (C - $7,200), Carter Verhaeghe (W - $4,400), Anthony Duclair (W - $4,100)

The Panthers will be eager to get the taste of their first regulation loss out of their mouths, and this highly effective top line should help do just that. Despite missing one of the team's first 12 games, Barkov has compiled a 7-6-13 line, leading the Panthers in points and ranking second in goals. Duclair leads the team with eight goals and has also chipped in four helpers, while Verhaeghe has contributed a 3-6-9 line. Expect this trio to carry play for the 10-1-1 Panthers against a Devils team that needed a shootout to beat the depleted Sharks in their last game to end a three-game losing streak.

DEFENSEMEN

Cam Fowler, ANH at VAN ($5,100): If Kevin Shattenkirk ($6,600) is out of your price range, Fowler's a solid alternative at $1,500 less. Shattenkirk leads the Ducks with seven power-play points through 13 games, but Fowler's hot on his heels with six. Both Anaheim blueliners have plenty of offensive upside given their success with the extra man heading into a matchup with the league-worst Vancouver penalty kill.

Justin Faulk, STL at WPG ($4,900): Speaking of vulnerable penalty kills, Winnipeg's 65.7 percent mark would be the worst in the league if not for Vancouver's struggles. Faulk's primed to take advantage of the Jets' inability to defend shorthanded, as he's working as the point man on the Blues' top power-play unit with Torey Krug in COVID-19 protocols. Faulk has a 2-2-4 line through 10 games this season and has chipped in solid supporting stats, with 25 shots and 11 blocked shots.

Oliver Kylington, CGY vs. SJ ($3,000): Kylington has quietly compiled a six-game point streak, with one goal and six assists over that stretch. Despite that success, the 24-year-old Swede can still be had for just $3,000 for the heavily favored Flames. Pounce on this bargain while it's available.

Ethan Bear, CAR at TB ($2,800): You'll need to find effective bargain options to best build around some of this slate's expensive stars, and Bear is one such value play at $2,800. He's thriving in a top-pairing role with Carolina, having eclipsed 9.0 fantasy points in three of his last four games and five of the past eight. With four assists, four multi-shot performances and four games with multiple blocked shots through 10 games, Bear's capable of contributing in a variety of ways on a nightly basis.
