Suffers first career defeat
WelterweightUFC
December 7, 2024
Garry lost to Shavkat Rakhmonov via unanimous decision (47-48, 47-48, 47-48) at UFC 310 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Rakhmonov had finished each of his first 18 opponents. The fact Garry was able to go the distance and take two rounds off him is no small feat. Garry's main issue was that it took him 10 minutes to get going. He landed nothing of note over the course of the first two rounds, and it ended up costing him the fight. Ian did get progressively better as the bout progressed and nearly submitted Rakhmonov in Round 5 with a rear-naked choke. Ultimately, however, there just weren't enough big moments to swing the decision in Garry's direction. Garry gets a lot of flack, but he's clearly an elite fighter. He just went five, hard-fought rounds against the guy most would considering to be, at a minimum, the second-best welterweight on the planet.

Garry defeated Michael Page via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC 303 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Garry deserves credit for recognizing what was working and sticking with it. He's a striker by trade, known for using his power and massive length to his advantage. Yet, Garry was losing the stand-up exchanges between the two and relied on his grappling instead. He almost choked MVP out on multiple occasions in Round 1. He went back to the grappling in Round 3, and while he did no significant damage, it was enough to win the frame. Garry is now 8-0 in the UFC with wins over the likes of Page, Geoff Neal and Neil Magny. He's not for everyone, but his talent is undeniable.

Remains undefeated as pro

Garry defeated Geoff Neal via split decision (30-27, 28-29, 30-27) at UFC 298 on Saturday in Anaheim.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't the overwhelming effort some expected from Garry as a -250 favorite, but the bottom line is that he remains undefeated as a professional, and he deserved to win this fight. Ian, at age 26, is a high-level striker who is exceptional at using his 6-foot-3 frame to his advantage. Neal had all sorts of issues consistently getting inside against Garry. The vast majority of his offensive flurries were one-and-done. The UFC has done a nice job of building Garry up. The company gave him a handful of easy fights early on and has gradually increased his competition level. Now a perfect 7-0 with the company, Ian's last three wins are over Neal, Neil Magny and Daniel Rodriguez. That's far from the top of the food chain at 170 pounds, but each is a quality victory. Garry, like him or not, is trending in the right direction.
