Loses as big favorite
FeatherweightUFC
December 9, 2023
Costa lost to Steve Garcia via KO (elbows) at 1:01 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
What a disaster. These two were supposed to fight last week before a Garcia illness forced the bout to be pushed back. They finally got it on here, and Costa quickly melted after a brilliant first round. A wild combination from Garcia sent Mel crashing to the mat, and although referee Chris Tognoni gave him more than enough time to recover, it was simply never happening. Costa has fought three times since making his UFC debut in January 2023. He was submitted by Thiago Moises in his first fight with the company before earning a unanimous decision win over Austin Lingo in July. He needs a win his next time out, as a 1-3 start could potentially result in a release.

Costa defeated Austin Lingo via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC on ESPN 49 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
A natural featherweight, Costa made his UFC debut on late-notice at lightweight this past January and was submitted by the talented Thiago Moises. He was back at his normal weight class for this one and looked excellent. Costa is an exceptionally talented striker. He landed with fluidity and power that Lingo simply couldn't match. When Costa was tired of beating Lingo up on the feet, he landed three takedowns for good measure. The 26-year-old Brazilian is a fighter to keep an eye on moving forward at 145 pounds.
