Namajunas defeated Miranda Maverick via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Outside of a couple hairy moments late in Round 2 in which Maverick scored a reversal and clamped on a deep choke, Namajunas looked pretty good. Both women landed 25 significant strikes, but a knockdown from Rose early in Round 3 was really the only notable blow. Namajunas was also able to get her wrestling game going, landing 2-of-4 takedowns, good for 6:33 worth of control time. Rose's grappling has long been underrated, and while she still lacks difference-making power, her technical striking has most definitely improved over the years. Namajunas has shown more good than bad since moving up to flyweight in September 2023, going 3-2. The main issue at this point is that she's had problems getting past opponents ranked above her (Erin Blanchfield, Manon Fiorot).

If you're scoring this fight as a whole, Namajunas definitely lost, but if you're scoring it round-by-round as we do in MMA, there's a case to be made she deserved a better fate. She did just fine when she was able to remain upright, but Blanchfield was able to get to her wrestling game in both the third and final rounds and it ended up being the difference. Namajunas also appeared to tire, which is a surprise considering how many five-round fights she has been in over the years. A former two-time UFC Women's Strawweight Champion, "Thug Rose" moved up to flyweight last September. She dropped a unanimous decision to Manon Fiorot in her debut before taking unanimous decisions over Tracy Cortez and Amanda Ribas in her last two bouts. Namajunas is on the fringes of title contention because of the division's lack of depth, but a 2-2 record in four fights at 125 pounds doesn't inspire much confidence moving forward.
