2025 Fantasy Outlook
Abbott, a second-round pick in 2021, made 25 starts for the Reds last season before a left shoulder strain put him on the shelf. There was talk of a return toward the end of September, but the team went the cautious route, prioritizing a normal offseason. Abbott enjoyed similar results to his rookie year before the injury, but his strikeout rate fell precipitously to a shade under 20 percent. He will likely need to ramp that back up if he is to maintain similar ratios, especially since he's a fairly heavy flyball pitcher in Cincinnati. The southpaw is tentatively lined up to open 2025 with a rotation spot, but he will need to prove his health and earn it in Cactus League play. Read Past Outlooks

Tosses seven scoreless innings
Abbott did not factor into Sunday's decision against the Brewers, allowing four hits while striking out seven across seven scoreless frames. He did not issue a walk.
Analysis
Abbott faced the minimum number of batters in five of seven frames, generating 12 whiffs and eight groundouts while tossing 92 pitches (61 strikes). It was the southpaw's fourth scoreless outing this season and lined him up for the win before William Contreras smacked a two-run homer in the ninth. Across 130 innings this season, Abbott has a 2.28 ERA and 1.08 WHIP, which ranks second and 14th best, respectively, among qualified starters in the majors. His next start is slated for next weekend on the road against the Diamondbacks, when he'll aim to collect his first win since July 9 against the Marlins.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Abbott emerged from relative obscurity to position himself as a potential rotation piece for the Reds entering 2024. A second-round pick in 2021, he struck out 36 batters in 15.2 innings at Double-A Chattanooga to open last season before quickly moving up to Triple-A Louisville. The left-hander was promoted to the majors after just seven starts at Triple-A, and Abbott would go on to finish 8-6 with a 3.87 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 120:44 K:BB over 109.1 big-league innings as a rookie. While he does not have great velocity, averaging just under 93 mph on his fastball, he throws four different pitches, including a sweeper that he features heavily against lefty hitters. Same-side hitters combined for just a .185/.224/.272 line against Abbott last season. His low groundball rate could lead to trouble in Great American Ball Park and it would be nice if he cut down on the walks, but Abbott is still just 24 and we expect there is another level to come with his strikeout rate.
