The Brewers liked Payne's outlook enough to surprise draft analysts by selecting him 17th overall in 2024 and giving him a below-slot $3.44 million bonus. He had a 110-mph max exit velocity in his debut and stole four bases while notching as many walks (three) as strikeouts in four games at Single-A. He will return to that level this year, where all the focus will be on how much power potential he shows to go with what already looks like a potential leadoff-hitting center-field profile.
