2023 Fantasy Outlook
Holmes ditched his curveball that wasn't effective in 2021 and relied solely on his 97 mph sinker (80% pitch usage) and slider (20%) last season. This led to phenomenal results, as the right-hander had a dominant first half for the Yankees and quickly took over as closer in the Bronx before being named to his first All Star team. Holmes had a 29-game scoreless streak early in the season and led qualified relievers with a ridiculous 75.8% groundball rate. On the flip side, he hit a rough patch a few weeks after the All Star Game and subsequently went on the IL with a back injury. He was not as sharp upon his return, which forced Aaron Boone to shift to a closer committee a few weeks before the playoffs. Holmes also dealt with a shoulder strain at the end of the season. Weighing the upside he showed in the first half of 2022 against his far worse second half makes Holmes a wild card for 2023 drafts, especially with Yankees bullpen roles currently in flux. Expected to close most games
Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated over the weekend that Holmes may sometimes be used outside of save situations during the regular season, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports. "There are going to be days where if it's [George] Springer, [Bo] Bichette and Vladdy [Vladimir Guerrero Jr.] coming up in the eighth inning in a big spot, that might be Clay," Boone explained.
ANALYSIS
Boone suggested that he plans to deploy Holmes in the highest leverage situations, which could come earlier than the ninth inning at times and may not always qualify the right-handed hurler for a save. Still, the manager hinted that he would continue to see plenty of chances to close, stating, "I would expect [Holmes] to close a lot of games for us. Probably most games, and hopefully a lot of games. But I do see a number of guys getting saves." Holmes didn't earn any saves in his first four big-league seasons, but he racked up 20 last year after taking over the ninth-inning role in the first half of the campaign. The reliever's stock is boosted by playing for a team projected to be among the best in the league, but Boone's comments and Holmes' late-season fade last year may provide enough risk to keep him outside of the top 10 closers in fantasy drafts.

2022 Fantasy Outlook
Holmes entered the 2021 season in jeopardy of washing entirely out of the league. However, he turned in a strong campaign, throwing particularly well after being dealt to New York where he posted a 1.61 ERA and logged five holds across 25 appearances and 28 innings to close the season. It was a season full of bests, as he generated career marks in both groundball rate (68.7 GB%) and strikeouts (26.7%) with his ERA (3.60) also unsurprisingly following suit. There should be some optimism that Holmes will be able to replicate his success in 2022 because a change in pitch mix seemed to dictate his change of fortune. He jumped his sinker usage from 32 percent to 58.9 percent and also introduced a slider as a primary part of his arsenal - an offering that limited opposing hitters to a .201 wOBA. There's a lengthy list of closer candidates ahead of Holmes in New York, so strong ratios and punchouts will be Holmes' primary path to fantasy value.
