2025 Fantasy Outlook
Waldrep's best stretch of 2024 was an eight-start run from April 20 through June 2, when he logged a 1.68 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 52:13 K:BB in 48.1 innings, primarily at Double-A. From there, he was promoted to the majors where he struggled mightily in two starts before suffering an elbow injury that cost him six weeks. He never fully settled back in at Triple-A once healthy, as he managed a 2.30 ERA at that level but his 1.47 WHIP and 27:20 K:BB in 31.1 innings paint an ugly picture. The balls and strikes challenge system at Triple-A didn't help matters for Waldrep, whose poor control has been his one big knock dating back to college. He has a devastating splitter and a mid-90s fastball, but his fastball lacks ideal shape and movement, and it's his third-best pitch behind his splitter and upper-80s slider. His Aug. 16 start where he walked six batters and struck out five over five scoreless innings is Waldrep in a nutshell - he could have success as a starter, but he isn't particularly close to doing so consistently due to his poor control. There's long been a thought that Waldrep could eventually fit best as a late-inning reliever, where his fastball might tick up to triple digits and his slider could touch 91-92 mph while relying on his plus-plus splitter to sit batters down, but Atlanta will likely keep trying to develop him as a starter in 2025. Fans nine in no-decision
Waldrep allowed one run on four hits and four walks while striking out nine over 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus Philadelphia on Sunday.
Analysis
Waldrep has yet to give up more than one run in any of his six outings in the majors this season. While he walked a season-high four batters Sunday, his nine strikeouts were also a new high-water mark. The lone run against him came on a Brandon Marsh solo shot in the fourth inning. Through 35.2 innings, the rookie right-hander has a sharp 1.01 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 33:11 K:BB. He'll look to keep his early success going at home versus Seattle in his next start.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Despite some notable control issues as an amateur, Atlanta bet on Waldrep's stuff and upside with the 24th overall pick in 2023, and his stock has continued to climb. While pitching for Florida, he had the three best starts of his life in June of 2023 (vs. Connecticut, South Carolina and Oral Roberts) before crashing back to earth against eventual College World Series winner LSU in his final start as an amateur. He logged a 1.53 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 62.1 percent groundball rate and 41:16 K:BB in 29.1 innings across all four full-season leagues after signing. His splitter is one of the best offspeed pitches in the minors, and his mid-to-upper-90s fastball and mid-to-upper-80s slider give him two more plus pitches. Other than general injury risk that applies to all pitchers, the make-or-break skill for the 6-foot-2 righty will be his control (13.0 BB%). If he throws enough strikes, he could be a No. 2 starter. Atlanta has not been shy about the idea that Waldrep could join the rotation sometime in 2024, and he has a very high ceiling whenever he arrives due to his strong team context and ability to pile up strikeouts.

Remaining in rotation
Atlanta manager Brian Snitker indicated after Saturday's doubleheader against the Marlins that Waldrep will remain in the big-league rotation, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. "He was a first-round pick because he had arm strength and an out pitch with the split, but now he's pitching [well]," Snitker said. "He's mixing the curveball, the split's still a really good pitch for him, the sinker instead of [four-seamer]. He's not having to pitch at 98 [miles per hour] to be effective. His command's a lot better."

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Atlanta not inclined to trade
Atlanta has received trade inquiries on Waldrep but has told interested clubs it isn't inclined to deal the pitcher, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Waldrep was torched for 13 runs and had a 3:8 K:BB over seven innings in his first two major-league starts in 2024 and also missed some time with an elbow issue. However, the 2023 first-round pick is still very highly thought of and won't turn 23 until March, so Atlanta is not inclined to include him in any potential trade.
