Ivan Herrera

24-Year-Old CatcherC
St. Louis Cardinals
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Herrera's reputation as an offensive-minded catcher held true in 2024. Among Cardinals hitters to accrue at least 250 plate appearances, Herrera led the club with his .369 xwOBA. However, while he graded out fine as a framer and blocker of balls in the dirt, Herrera was so inept at throwing out opposing base stealers (he caught just four of them in 59 tries) that he was leap-frogged on the depth chart by the defensively-superior Pedro Pages during the stretches Willson Contreras was hurt. Contreras will move off catcher full-time in 2025, leaving Herrera and Pages to split starts behind the dish. Herrera's offensive upside makes him a fine fantasy sleeper, but he'll need to show some level of improvement with his throwing if he wants to outpace Pages in playing time. Read Past Outlooks

Expected to catch on Opening Day
CSt. Louis Cardinals
March 24, 2025
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Monday that he's planning to start Herrera at catcher and bat him sixth Opening Day versus the Twins, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
ANALYSIS
The lineup the Cardinals are using in Monday's exhibition tilt against Triple-A Memphis -- one that features Herrera behind the plate -- is the same one Marmol is eyeing for the opener. Herrera has been in a competition with Pedro Pages for the St. Louis catcher job, and it appears Herrera will get the first crack at it. What the ultimate breakdown in playing time between the two catchers will be over the duration of the season isn't clear.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Herrera took a big step forward last season at Triple-A Memphis, sporting a .291/.451/.500 batting line with 10 home runs and 11 stolen bases. He was also very productive during his brief time in the majors, slashing .297/.409/.351 with a 61.5 percent hard-hit rate in 13 contests. Herrera's strike-zone discipline has long been a strength, and he took it to another level in 2023 at Memphis with a 20 percent walk rate and 20.5 percent strikeout rate. His power hasn't fully unlocked to this point, due in large part to a bloated groundball rate, but given that he's still just 23 that part of his game might still grow. With Andrew Knizner non-tendered, Herrera is in line to serve as Willson Contreras' understudy in 2024. It's a role which garnered 63 starts and 241 plate appearances for Knizner last season, and a similar workload for Herrera seems likely. That's not enough playing time for Herrera to be very fantasy relevant, but he would have some upside if pushed into more responsibilities.
Herrera's developmental schedule was stalled over the winter once St. Louis inked Willson Contreras to a long-term deal in late November. Herrera is likely scheduled to get back to Triple-A unless he beats out Andrew Knizner in the spring. Herrera has much more upside than Knizner, but the addition of Contreras allows the Cardinals to give Herrera some more seasoning in Memphis because he should be getting more than 1-2 games a week than he would get in St. Louis as long as Contreras is healthy. Simply put, Herrera's immediate future is a bit less exciting as long as he remains in St. Louis as long as Contreras is healthy.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Garnering trade interest
CSt. Louis Cardinals
July 30, 2024
The Cardinals have received trade interest in Herrera, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Woo writes that Herrera "isn't necessarily on the block," but St. Louis will entertain offers. Because of Herrera's defensive ability, Pedro Pages is the preferred backup behind Willson Contreras, and with Contreras under contract through 2027, it's not a surprise to hear Herrera might be on the way out. The 24-year-old has slashed .279/.340/.378 with the Cardinals and .256/.418/.535 at Triple-A Memphis in 2024.
