2023 Projections
2023 Fantasy Outlook
After playing for four different teams in his previous four seasons, Garcia signed a 2-year deal with San Diego and primarily served in a setup capacity. He was especially valuable in fantasy leagues that count holds, notching 20 (T-6th in the NL) during his age-35 season while also contributing four wins and three saves. The right-hander maintained above-average strikeout and walk rates while inducing plenty of ground balls with his 99 mph sinker. His slider (57% whiff rate) and spitter (40%) were fantastic put-away pitches and he slightly increased his usage of both. Garcia is likely third in San Diego's hierarchy for saves behind Josh Hader and Robert Suarez, but expect plenty of holds again in 2023 with the occasional save chance. Read Past Outlooks

Struggling with walks this spring
Garcia has a 5:5 K:BB through five innings in Cactus League play and has allowed two runs, one of which came on a home run.
ANALYSIS
Garcia also pitched for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, allowing one run and posting a 2:1 K:BB in 2.1 frames. The veteran reliever has struggled with his control at times in his career, though he's posted the best walk rates of his career in the past two campaigns. Garcia is expected to be one of the Padres' top setup men this season, especially with Robert Suarez (arm) and Drew Pomeranz (elbow) likely to begin the campaign on the injured list. He picked up a career-high 20 holds last season and could be impactful in fantasy leagues that count that statistic in 2023.

Garcia could be a candidate to factor into the closing picture for the Padres after he submitted a 3.24 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 34:8 K:BB in 33.1 innings for the Cardinals in 2021 before inking a two-year, $7 million deal with San Diego in free agency this winter. He will be opening the year on the injured list with what seems to be an oblique strain, so if any of Dinelson Lamet, Robert Suarez, Emilio Pagan or Pierce Johnson run with the closer's role, Garcia will be stuck pitching in the seventh and eighth innings.
