Throwing bullpens in camp
Patino (elbow) is throwing bullpen sessions during the early portion of spring training, Sammy Levitt of 97.3 The Fan reports.
ANALYSIS
Patino underwent Tommy John surgery last April and signed with San Diego on a minor-league deal in January. His first taste of the big leagues came with the Padres in 2020, and he's since logged MLB action with the Rays and White Sox. Though Patino seems to be progressing in his rehab, he isn't expected to be ready to pitch in games until around the middle of the season. Patino will likely settle at Triple-A El Paso once he's back to full health.

Brad Johnson is back for the 2025 season and breaks down each division starting with the NL West, where the rich just got richer, with the addition of Roki Sasaki.

Many of the job battles in the NL West involve Rockies pitchers you want no part of, but whoever wins the Padres' closer role could return plenty of fantasy value.

Brad Johnson helps get ready for draft day by analyzing pitching staffs, and this week he focuses on the National League West, and in Los Angeles, Walker Buehler will start the season on the IL.

Corbin Young discusses four seldom-used pitches that could help drive pitchers to new heights in 2024, including Zach Eflin's sweeper.

The guy who was once the biggest piece of the Blake Snell to San Diego deal is now toiling in a middle relief role for one of the worst bullpens in baseball. Patino has consistently struggled with his command around injuries and 2023 was no different no matter who his employer was. Patino walked 56 batters around 68 strikeouts in the 81.1 innings he pitched in Durham, Charlotte, Chicago, and Tampa Bay. His split-change has shown promise, but he does not get to use the pitch as much as he would like because he falls behind in the count too frequently and has to use fastballs to catch back up. Chicago needs a replacement for Reynaldo Lopez and perhaps they envisions Patino as that guy with his raw stuff if the coaching staff and front office can realign what Tampa Bay could not. Until they do, you can safely ignore Patino in all formats outside of 50 round draft and holds.
