Matt Foster

Foster did not break camp with the White Sox last season but was summoned to the squad early in the campaign and soon became a key part of one of the AL's best bullpens. The right-hander appeared in 23 games (including twice as an opener), finishing with a 2.20 ERA and 0.87 WHIP. His sudden success was unexpected considering the fact that Foster had previously pitched only one moderately effective season at Triple-A, though he did enjoy a series of strong campaigns in the lower levels of the minors. His fastball peaks in the mid-90s and is complemented by a standout changeup that ranks as his best pitch. Foster's combined usage rate between the two offerings was over 90% in his rookie campaign, and opposing batters hit below .170 against each pitch. His strikeout and walk rates (28.4% and 8.3%, respectively) help validate his success and offer hope of more high-leverage opportunities next season.
