2026 Fantasy Outlook
Pivetta truthers were finally able to rejoice in 2025, as the enigmatic pitcher finally put together the season prognosticators and fans believed Pivetta could put together on an annual basis. The hurler crossed the country in free agency and found a home in San Diego, where he set career highs in wins, ERA, quality starts, strikeouts and, most importantly, his lowest home run total as a starter. Pivetta has long teased about his potential with strikeouts and control, but command issues in the strikezone along with the unforgiving run environments of Philadelphia and Boston led to too many home runs and annual ERAs over 4.00. Petco Park and the marine layer helped him put it all together, as Pivetta was able to avoid everything that had ailed him in the past. He adjusted his repertoire to include seven pitch types, and now throws at least five different pitches to both righties and lefties. The .235 BABIP and 79 percent LOB percentage are both career bests, so it would be wise to bake in some regression for 2026 and at least look for something halfway between 2024 and 2025 results. Fans nine in Game 1 loss
Pivetta took the loss in Tuesday's game against the Cubs after surrendering two earned runs on three hits and no walks while striking out nine batters across five innings.
Analysis
The right-hander allowed just one baserunner through the first four innings of Tuesday's contest, but a pair of solo homers from Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly to lead off the fifth put Chicago in front. Pivetta struck out the next three batters he faced to finish his start; however, a shutdown performance from the Cubs' bullpen kept the Padres behind for the rest of the game. It was a reassuring performance from the 32-year-old after he finished the regular season by giving up six runs in 10.1 frames, but San Diego will now need to win two straight games at Wrigley Field for Pivetta to have any chance of facing the Brewers in the NLDS.

2018
After bouncing between the bullpen and rotation in 2023, Pivetta was mostly a starter in 2024. He once again had stretches of dominance but had an up-and-down season. The right-hander finished with a 4.14 ERA (3.51 xERA) over 145.2 innings. Pivetta lived in the strike zone - not unusual - with success (28.9 strikeout percentage) and failure (1.7 HR/9). He tends to hit a lot of barrels which can lead to elevated hard-hit rates, but he's pitched in a difficult market, missed some bats and doesn't walk many. That sounds like a major league starter, and the Red Sox extended him a $21.05 million qualifying offer, triple what he made in 2024. While the payday was enticing, Pivetta rejected the offer and will seek a multi-year offer. A couple of sources estimated he could get a three-year deal in the $50-60 million range.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Closing in on contract
Pivetta is making progress toward a contract with an unknown team, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
Analysis
Morosi rules out the incumbent Red Sox as the landing spot for Pivetta, but it's not clear which club is the favorite to sign the right-hander. Pivetta's market has been tough to pin down this offseason and undoubtedly has been affected by the hurler rejecting a qualifying offer, which means the team that signs him must surrender a draft pick. Slated to turn 32 on Friday, Pivetta held a 4.14 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 172:36 K:BB across 145.2 regular-season innings in 2024.
