Taylor signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Saturday that includes an invitation to spring training, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis
Taylor elected free agency Friday after being outrighted by the Mariners, and he'll now attempt to carve out a role for himself with the Padres. The 27-year-old carries just a .532 OPS through 83 career plate appearances in the majors, but he slashed .296/.378/.461 with 86 RBI, 124 runs scored and 44 steals over 137 games at Triple-A Tacoma in 2025.

Taylor began the season with Triple-A Omaha before earning his first trip to The Show in mid-June. He shuttled back and forth a few times but never was able to show he could handle major league pitching. Taylor contributed eight steals without being caught in just 31 games with the Royals, but his 31.9 percent strikeout rate and 30.0 percent HardHit% resulted in a low .270 on-base mark. However, on the farm, Taylor's combined line was .299/.416/.464 with a 20.5 percent strikeout rate and 15.9 percent walk rate. The 25-year-old's primary position is second base, but he can play third base, shortstop and left field, so he could earn a job as a utility infielder with a strong spring. Taylor isn't worthy of anything more than a reserve spot in an AL-only format, but he could emerge as a cheap source of steals in season if he can better approach the plate skills displayed on the farm.
