Cano was once again among the league leaders in the holds category, racking up 34 (T-3rd) for the Orioles. The 31-year-old righty managed to improve his strikeout rate by 3.1 percentage points, bringing it to a solid 26.1 percent overall, but issued more free passes with a 9.6 percent walk rate (27th percentile). The latter marked a five percent increase over 2023, during which it was a 96th percentile metric. Cano's 96 mph sinker still produced one of the highest groundball rates among relievers at 62.9 percent, making his profile one that is certainly capable of closing. If Baltimore eases Felix Bautista back into the closer role, Cano could benefit with additional save opportunities. Double-digit saves are possible in 2025, but don't count on more than 10-to-15 unless Bautista has any setbacks in his recovery. Implodes Saturday
Cano (3-7) took the loss and blew a save opportunity against the Blue Jays on Saturday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while recording just one out.
                  Analysis
With Baltimore up 4-2 in the ninth inning, Keegan Akin got the first stab at notching a save. He gave up two one-out singles and was subsequently relieved by Cano, who quickly gave up a pair of singles that plated a pair of runs to tie the score. The only out Cano recorded came on a sacrifice fly by Alejandro Kirk that brought home the winning run for Toronto. Cano came into Saturday having allowed just one run over his previous eight appearances, but he's now blown five of his seven save chances on the campaign.

        2024 Fantasy Outlook

Acquired by the Orioles in the 2022 Jorge Lopez trade, Cano's rookie season was a resounding success. The right-hander didn't break camp with Baltimore, but was recalled in mid-April and didn't allow a hit or walk across his first 9 appearances. Even better, he didn't allow a run until May 19, parlaying his early-season dominance into a high-leverage setup role and All-Star nomination. Cano leveraged his sinker (55.7% usage) to produce a 58.9% groundball percentage, but he didn't strike many batters out (23% K%). However, his 4.6% walk rate was in the 96th percentile, while his ratios were in the top-15 among qualified relievers. Cano tied for the league lead with 31 holds, but also added 8 saves. Those expecting him to take over closing duties for Baltimore in 2024 should note Cano only recorded 4 of the Orioles' 9 saves after Felix Bautista's season-ending injury. He's still likely to receive save chances, but the team may be looking to add a short-term option for closing duties.

                  Candidate for summer move
Cano is one of several relief pitchers the Orioles might make available for trade before the deadline, Jim Bowden of The Athletic speculates.
                  Analysis
The Orioles have had a disappointing season in 2025, and it wouldn't be surprising to see some of their relief arms being involved in trade talks over the upcoming weeks. Cano's 4.50 ERA and 1.30 WHIP aren't impressive and would be his worst numbers of the past three seasons, but he might generate some trade interest as a power arm out of the bullpen.
