Yonathan Daza

29-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Colorado Rockies
2023 Fantasy Outlook
After hitting .301 last season, Daza's average over the past two years is a respectable .293. However, in those 673 at bats, he clubbed only four homers and swiped two bases. That's a weekend series for some in Coors Field, but Daza gets to play half of his games there. Daza's strength is a career 16.5% strikeout rate, but he walks at a 6.4% clip. His average exit velocity was 1st percentile with a 2nd percentile HardHit%. This works with speed and a 55% groundball rate but is not ideal for an outfielder in Coors Field. Daza played a lot last season with Kris Bryant out. There are still pathways to playing time if Bryant is healthy and his batting average will likely give Daza positive earnings in a mixed league. However, be aware where it comes from and be especially leery of using Daza just because he's at home. Read Past Outlooks

Daza was outrighted to Triple-A Albuquerque on Monday after clearing waivers.
ANALYSIS
Daza owns a 75 wRC+ across 924 big-league plate appearances and has graded out as an average-to-below-average defender in the outfield over the past two seasons, so it's not overly surprising that none of the league's other 29 teams were willing to put in a waiver claim for him. He'll stick in the Colorado organization and could face a more difficult path back to the big leagues now that he's no longer a member of the Rockies' 40-man roster.

Stat Review
How does Yonathan Daza compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many of a batter’s balls in play go for hits.
  • ISO
Isolated Power. Slugging percentage minus batting average. A computation used to measure a batter's raw power.
  • AVG

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2021
2020
Daza got his most extended look at the major-league level in 2021, earning 331 plate appearances in Colorado. His primary attribute at the plate is his ability to make contact, as he's maintained an 18.2 percent strikeout rate across 444 career plate appearances. That hasn't translated to a strong batting average however, due to his poor quality of contact (1.5 percent barrel rate, 25.8 percent hard-hit rate). Combined with a groundball rate in excess of 55 percent, there's also very little power upside to speak of. Daza is likely to remain on the roster due to his defensive ability and because he is out of minor-league options, but with Randal Grichuk, Charlie Blackmon, Kris Bryant and Connor Joe each set for a regular role in the lineup, Daza isn't likely to find significant playing time without an injury to someone on the depth chart ahead of him.
Daza got his first taste of major-league action in 2019, but he failed to make an appearance in the big leagues during the 60-game season in 2020. The outfielder has raked at every level of the minors, but he experienced some growing pains during his 44 games in 2019. Daza hit 59.5% of his batted balls on the ground and had a hard-hit rate of just 24.7% while recording a 10.8% swinging-strike rate. He had a .399 BABIP at the Triple-A level in 2019, but that mark fell to just .260 in the big leagues. Daza has elite speed, but he's only had one season in which he's stolen more than 20 bases. While he should get more chances to reach the majors once again if a full season is played in 2021, he'll have plenty of outfielders to compete with for playing time. The speedster is no lock to make the Opening Day roster, and he holds little value in redraft leagues amid a talented group of outfielders in Colorado.
Daza has done well enough in the minors the past few years to earn a promotion to the next level and last year he debuted with 44 games in the big leagues when the team needed him around injuries and roster expansion. Daza has elite sprint speed, as he is in the top 10th percentile of the league, but that has not exactly translated over into steals in his career as he has topped 20 steals in a season just one time. That may be an organizational type thing, but after watching what fellow speedster Garrett Hampson did last September, maybe it isn't. Daza is a perfect reserve outfield candidate, but the Rockies currently have a lot of depth at that position with guys like Hampson, Sam Hilliard, Ian Desmond and Raimel Tapia available behind Charlie Blackmon and David Dahl. Daza seems destined to return to Triple-A.
