2026 Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Coming off four straight 30-homer campaigns, Alvarez was limited to 48 games last season due to a hand fracture and ankle sprain. The veteran slugger certainly wasn't a stranger to injuries prior to 2025, but he still averaged 135 regular-season games per year and was consistently one of the best hitters in MLB. Even when available in 2025, Alvarez's performance was underwhelming, as he finished with a career-worst .797 OPS and just six home runs. However, he still showcased his elite plate discipline with a 14.5 percent walk rate and 16.6 percent strikeout rate. The skills are clearly still there as Alvarez enters his age-29 season, but durability remains a concern. His ADP in 2026 will likely end up being a bit of a discount if he's able to stay healthy, and most fantasy managers will probably be willing to take the risk given Alvarez's elite track record. Resumes jogging
General manager Dana Brown said Wednesday that Alvarez (ankle) has begun jogging at roughly 70 percent intensity, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Alvarez suffered a severe left ankle sprain during the final weeks of the regular season. Brown's comments indicate that the 28-year-old is coming along nicely in his recovery, and the GM added that he expects Alvarez to be ready to go by the start of spring training. The righty-hitting slugger also missed significant time in 2025 due to a fracture in his right hand and finished the season with just a .797 OPS across 199 plate appearances.

Alvarez set career-high marks in games played (147) and plate appearances (635) while clearing 30 homers for the fourth consecutive year. He suffered a right knee sprain during the final week of the 2024 regular season, but Alvarez was able to return for the wild-card round. It's almost scary what Alvarez has been able to do with his strikeout rate, lowering it to just 15 percent last season while keeping his Statcast page crimson red with elite batted-ball numbers. He has a long history of knee problems, including double knee surgery in August of 2020, but Alvarez has few peers when on the field, ranking behind only Aaron Judge in wRC+ (165) over the past four seasons. Alvarez retains outfield eligibility after making 53 starts in left field, but he should continue to see most of his time at designated hitter. Taking advantage of the bigger bases and new rules limiting pickoff attempts, Alvarez added six steals last season, after coming into the campaign with two career steals. Fantasy managers would probably prefer he not run at all given his injury history.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Expected back for spring training
Alvarez, who was limited to only 48 regular-season games in the 2025 season due to several injuries, is expected to be ready for spring training next year, general manager Dana Brown told Matt Kawahara of The Houston Chronicle.
Analysis
Alvarez dealt with a hand sprain between early May to late August, and while he posted excellent numbers upon his return, he ended the season on the injured list due to a left ankle sprain. Brown said Alvarez should have "a normal offseason," and is back to running at around "65-70 percent" of his usual capability. Alvarez hit .273 with six homers and a .797 OPS in the 2025 regular season, but having him healthy for the 2026 campaign would provide a huge boost to the middle of the Astros' lineup.
