CBLos Angeles Rams

January 17, 2025
Witherspoon (thigh) is officially questionable for Sunday's NFC divisional-round contest against the Eagles, but he's expected to be able to suit up, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Witherspoon suffered a thigh injury in Monday's wild-card win against the Vikings and missed most of the second half of the contest. He was deemed DNP at practice both Wednesday and Thursday but was able to participate in a limited fashion Friday. Rams head coach Sean McVay said Friday that he expects all four Los Angeles players heading into the weekend deemed questionable, including Witherspoon, to suit up Sunday.

The six-year veteran signed with the Rams after a forgettable two-year stint with the Steelers, which included participating in just four games in 2022 due to a lingering hamstring injury. Witherspoon lands on a Rams secondary that just lost its two biggest producers in Jalen Ramsey and Troy Hill, and with Derion Kendrick already nursing a hamstring injury of his own in training camp, Witherspoon should have a role as a depth piece.
Witherspoon was traded from the Seahawks to the Steelers ahead of the 2021 season and recorded 15 tackles (14 solo), three interceptions and nine pass defenses over nine games during his first season in Pittsburgh. He's in line for a starting role in 2022 since Joe Haden is no longer with the team.
Ahkello Witherspoon - Witherspoon couldn't hold down a starting job in four years with the 49ers and even served as a healthy scratch a few times. The Seahawks signed the 2017 third-round pick to a prove-it deal this offseason as he looks for a fresh start. Witherspoon is expected to compete with Pierre Desir and possibly rookie fourth-round pick Tre Brown for the left cornerback job that was left behind by Shaquill Griffin, who signed with the Jaguars this offseason.
Witherspoon got off the strong start in 2019 as the starting corner opposite Richard Sherman, but an injury and poor play upon his return forced him into a backup role behind rookie Emmanuel Moseley. The latter seized the opportunity and didn't relinquish the role for the rest of the campaign. Witherspoon will have to fight for that starting job during training camp, but Moseley will have a leg up early on.
Witherspoon really struggled in a starting role opposite Richard Sherman last season, as his side of the field was constantly being picked on by opposing offenses. The 23-year-old's shortcomings led to the front office going out and acquiring veteran corner Jason Verrett, who figures to replace Witherspoon in the starting lineup when healthy. With K'waun Williams occupying the slot, Witherspoon could begin the year as a fourth/backup corner after faltering as a starter last year.
Witherspoon played 12 games in his rookie campaign and finished with 32 tackles, seven pass breakups and two interceptions. He's expected to be a starter in 2018, but his numbers don't shout IDP asset. Take a pass on Witherspoon unless he shatters expectations in the preseason.

ANALYSIS
The former 49er signed with Seattle ahead of the 2021 season but never played a game for the Seahawks, instead getting traded to Pittsburgh after failing to win a starting job in training camp. Witherspoon took some time to adjust to his new surroundings but came on down the stretch last season, and he wound up leading the Steelers with nine passes defended and three interceptions. His main competition for a starting job appears to be former Bills cornerback Levi Wallace.
