The Dolphins signed Irvin to their active roster Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Irivn spent time with Detroit earlier in the season, appearing in just two games and recording 1.0 sack on 42 defensive snaps. The 36-year-old was brought in alongside Malik Reed (practice squad) and Justin Houston (active roster) before the Dolphins' playoff push, as the team is preparing to be without both its top edge rushers in Jaelan Phillips (Achilles) and Bradley Chubb (knee) for the remainder of the season.

Irvin will look to fill the void left behind by Jadeveon Clowney, as he's returning to Seattle after spending four years elsewhere. The 32-year-old only missed three games over those seasons, and he stacked up 30 sacks along the way. The Seahawks finished with just 28 sacks last year - 29th in the league - and while Irvin will be a clear downgrade from Clowney, he's in line for a consistent snap count in 2020.
In 16 games split between the Raiders and Falcons last season, Irvin totaled 6.5 sacks, slightly elevating his seven-year career average. However, Irvin's overall production plummeted, as he racked up only 19 tackles, paling in comparison to his personal best of 58 the year prior. To get back on track, Irvin signed a one-year deal with the Panthers this offseason. Although Mario Addison, the team's sack leader over the last three seasons, and rookie first-rounder Brian Burns also feature at outside linebacker, Irvin should still get enough snaps to bring his tackling numbers up significantly while getting to the quarterback at his usual rate.
Irvin's production has been consistent in his two years with the Raiders thus far, averaging 57.5 tackles, 7.5 sacks and five forced fumbles per season since 2016. Thanks to the offseason addition of fellow linebacker Tahir Whitehead, Irvin may be asked to drop back in coverage less as incoming defensive coordinator Paul Guenther hopes to have a more impactful pass-rushing presence alongside Khalil Mack in 2018.
Irvin, who spent the first four years of his career in Seattle where he won a Super Bowl, notched a career-high 57 tackles during his debut campaign with the Raiders in 2016. He also tied for the league-lead in forced fumbles with six, while racking up seven sacks in the process, as offensive lines were forced to focus more heavily on Defensive Player of the Year Khalil Mack at defensive end. With three years left on his contract, Irvin is slated to once again start at outside linebacker in 2017 for one of the league's top passing-rushing defenses on the exterior.
Irvin joins the Raiders after spending his first four seasons in the league with the Seahawks. The 28-year-old plays with a ballhawking mentality, boasting 22 sacks, four forced fumbles, three interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, and two fumble recoveries in 58 career games to date. He'll team up with Malcolm Smith and Khalil Mack to form one of the nastiest pass-rushing defenses in the league, making him late-round option in deep IDP leagues.
This is likely Irvin's last year in Seattle. The Seahawks declined to pick up his $7.8 million fifth-year option, which sent Irvin to Twitter to profanely express his disappointment. While he is probably the best pure athlete on a team blessed with great speed and quickness, he hasn't come close to living up to his status as the 15th overall draft pick in 2012. He's best as a situational pass rusher rather than an every-down strongside linebacker, where he totaled only 38 tackles last year (he added 6.5 sacks and two interceptions). But, Irvin's contract status is not just about performance -- he's also a victim of the salary cap. After investing in Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright, the Seahawks simply don't have cap room for another high-priced linebacker. Because of his freak athletic ability, he'll likely get paid next year in free agency, but by a team other than the Seahawks.
A 2012 first-round pick, Irvin appears to be a man without a position. He's at his best rushing the quarterback, but he's too small to play the run, which limits his snaps. The Seahawks moved him to OLB last season to keep him on the field more, but he was a bit overmatched, only keeping up thanks to his elite speed and athleticism. He's expected to need most of training camp to recover from hip surgery and could start the year on the PUP list. This is could be his last year in Seattle if the Seahawks need his (albeit relatively small) cap space next season.
Irvin set a Seahawks rookie record with eight sacks last season and

ANALYSIS
Irvin has played only sparingly across the last two seasons, totaling eight games and 12 tackles in that span, but he played for the Seahawks in 2020 and is familiar with the scheme, and the team has suffered a number of injuries to its linebacker corps in recent weeks. Irvin was drafted in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by Seattle, and this is his third stint with the organization.
