March 16, 2025
Rush and the Ravens have agreed to a two-year contract valued at up to $12.2 million, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush spent the first eight seasons of his career in Dallas and made 14 starts during that span, winning nine of those games. The 31-year-old saw the most action of his career last year after Dak Prescott (hamstring) was hurt in Week 10, and Rush finished with an 83.8 passer rating, completing 61 percent of his 308 pass attempts with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions over 12 games. With Baltimore, Rush will be the No. 2 QB behind Lamar Jackson, who has missed just one regular-season contest over the past two years.

Rush was relegated to mop-up duty last season, as Dak Prescott was healthy for a full season for the first time in four years. Rush didn’t do much when he did get on the field, posting a 6.0 YPA with only two completions longer than 20 yards (on 24 attempts). The Cowboys seem content with Rush’s game-managing skills, and Trey Lance, for whom Dallas traded just before Week 1 last season, never challenged him for the backup job. Perhaps that changes this season. Lance certainly is more physically skilled than Rush and far more mobile -- in the last three seasons, Rush has -7 rushing yards on 30 carries. If Lance’s accuracy finally comes around, he would have more upside, both to the Cowboys and fantasy owners, than Rush.
Another Dak Prescott injury landed Rush under center again in 2022, and the 29-year-old Central Michigan product won four straight starts before falling to the Eagles in Week 6. His efficiency took a step back, however, and those victories owed more to Dan Quinn's defense than Rush's arm. With coordinator Kellen Moore leaving to take over the Chargers offense, Rush's knowledge of Moore's scheme no longer is a plus, and he could face a stiff challenge for the No. 2 quarterback job in training camp from the more athletically gifted Will Grier, a third-round pick of the Panthers in 2019, and Trey Lance, for whom the Cowboys traded in late August.
Rush claimed the No. 2 job behind Dak Prescott in camp last year and made himself a fan favorite Week 8 by leading the Cowboys to a win at Minnesota in his only start of the season. The 28-year-old doesn't offer much in the way of arm strength or athleticism, but he knows the scheme and makes good decisions. He again is positioned for the backup role in 2022, but he might have to fend off Will Grier to hang onto it.
Rush has thrown a combined three passes over his first two seasons in the league, but he was nonetheless given a vote of confidence as the primary backup in 2018, and there's little to suggest that will change in the upcoming season. He'll have to hold off Mike White in the preseason, though White did not see a single snap of action in his 2018 rookie campaign. Even if Rush gets an opportunity, the uncertainty limits his fantasy viability, even in dynasty and deeper 2-QB leagues.
Rush saw brief action in two games last year after replacing Kellen Moore as Dak Prescott's backup. He'll face competition for the job from fifth round pick Mike White, but Rush's experience in the Cowboys' system could give him a slight edge.
Rush will attempt to follow in the footsteps of Tony Romo as one of the rare undrafted free agent quarterbacks to succeed in the NFL. With a similar profile to current Cowboys backup Kellen Moore, Rush makes up for what he lacks in arm strength with football IQ. Nonetheless, Rush requires time on the practice squad to re-shape his body and improve his throwing mechanics.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Time could be over in Dallas
QBDallas Cowboys
February 24, 2025
Rush may be priced out of the Cowboys' plans in free agency, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
The 31-year-old quarterback has had success in Dallas, going 9-5 in his starts when Dak Prescott has been sidelined, including the second half of the 2024 season after Prescott underwent hamstring surgery in November. That success could make him too expensive to bring back, however, given the massive cap hit Prescott carries. Rush likely doesn't have the physical tools to interest other teams looking for a starter, but he could be a good fit for an organization looking for a steady, experienced No. 2 QB.
