23-Year-Old Wide ReceiverWR

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Metchie, a second-round pick out of Alabama in 2022, never got on the field after being diagnosed with leukemia last summer. The 22-year-old overcame the illness and participated in a voluntary late-April camp in preparation for normal offseason activities and training camp. With Brandin Cooks traded and Nico Collins still needing to prove himself, there's an opportunity for Metchie and the team's other young wideouts to see ample playing time. Metchie was expected to be a significant part of the offense last season, but there are no guarantees for 2023, particularly with a new offensive brain trust in place. Read Past Outlooks

Needs consistency
WRHouston Texans
February 4, 2024
Metchie finished the 2023 regular season with 16 catches (on 30 targets) for 158 yards over 16 games.
ANALYSIS
For much of the season, which was essentially his rookie year after sitting out 2022 with acute promyelocytic leukemia, Metchie was on the bottom rungs of the depth chart. He got to show himself late in the season when injuries hit and was a big part of the playoff win over Cleveland, but Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans told Jonathan M. Alexander and Dennis Silva II of the Houston Chronicle that Metchie had an inconsistent year. "I think Metchie's had a little up and downs throughout the season, had some opportunities to make plays," Ryans said. "Some moments he made them, some he didn't." One of the organization's goals during the offseason is to build around quarterback C.J. Stroud, and Metchie will need to show consistency to force a move up the depth chart.

Buried on depth chart entering 2024
WRHouston Texans
April 3, 2024
Metchie could have trouble getting on the field during the 2024 season after the Texans acquired wideout Stefon Diggs from the Bills on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Diggs and Nico Collins will be locked into starting roles as long as they're on the field, while Tank Dell and Noah Brown both substantially outperformed Metchie in 2024. Dell and Brown are currently working their way back from fibula and shoulder injuries, respectively, but the expectation is that both will be available for the start of the 2024 season. Houston also has veteran Robert Woods, who racked up 426 receiving yards to Metchie's 158 in 2023. The Texans had high hopes for Metchie when they drafted him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but the former Alabama wide receiver's window of opportunity to carve out a meaningful role in Houston looks to be closing.

2022 Fantasy Outlook
Metchie landed in the right place to get snaps and targets, but he's expected to miss his rookie season after being diagnosed with leukemia in July. On top of that, he's coming back from the ACL tear that ended his college career Dec. 4. Prior to that, he had 2,058 yards and 14 TDs in his final two seasons at Alabama. Despite playing two fewer games than first-round pick Jameson Williams last year, Metchie finished with 15 more targets than his admittedly more-explosive teammate (Williams had 430 more yards than Metchie nonetheless). The Texans took Metchie at No. 44 overall, and he could be in the mix for a starting job next year if everything goes well with his leukemia treatment, as expected.
