2025 Fantasy Outlook
Now in his fifth season out of Kansas and Virginia Tech, Herbert has settled in to the NFL as a journeyman rushing specialist, though one who occasionally catches attention for his elusiveness with the football. That happened more often earlier in Herbert's career, when he split the Chicago backfield with David Montgomery, but it was only in 2023 that Herbert had just strung together a three-year run where he produced 1,775 rushing yards on 364 carries (4.9 YPC). Herbert has never produced as a receiver, however, and there might be more passing-down work up for grabs behind Jonathan Taylor than carries. Herbert will need to hold off rookie fifth-round pick D.J. Giddens for the carries behind Taylor, and they both need to worry about Tyler Goodson taking most of the passing-down work after Taylor. There is reason to suspect Herbert is Indianapolis' second-best pure runner at running back, however. Read Past Outlooks

Cut from Indy's practice squad
The Colts cut Herbert from the practice squad Monday.
ANALYSIS
The move makes room on the Colts' practice squad for running back Ameer Abdullah. Herbert joined Indianapolis' scout team in late August after failing to make the 53-man active roster, but the 2021 sixth-rounder will now look to join a team in need of backfield depth. Herbert played in 14 regular-season games in 2024 between the Bengals (eight) and Bears (six) and totalled 36 carries for 130 yards and one touchdown while adding 10 catches (on 11 targets) for 25 yards.

Herbert is a useful enough player, but by now it's clear he won't develop into a standout or a three-down back. Herbert is perhaps an above-average pure runner, averaging 4.9 yards on 364 career carries, but he's caught just 43 passes through three seasons at a yield of 4.9 yards per target. Efficiency as a runner is nice, but it rarely translates for fantasy if the player isn't catching passes or getting goal-line carries. That's especially true now that the Bears have signed a superior talent, D'Andre Swift, who becomes a clear favorite to lead the backfield in both carries and targets. Swift's injury history suggests he probably won't be tasked with massive snap counts, but even then it might be 2023 fourth-round pick Roschon Johnson picking up as much or more of the slack then Herbert.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Acquired as backup
Herbert was acquired by the Bengals to take some of the backfield burden off Chase Brown, Paul Denher Jr. of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bengals lost Zack Moss for the rest of the regular season with a neck injury, leaving them with very little depth behind Brown. Herbert is not expected to challenge for the lead-back role, something coach Zac Taylor made clear in his comments Tuesday. He suggested Herbert could be in line for a handful of carries per game, while Denher believes that Herbert will also get onto the field in passing-down situations.
