Mike Edwards

29-Year-Old SafetyS
Kansas City Chiefs
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Edwards played all 17 regular-season games with Kansas City in 2023 before struggling to latch on in a consistent role with both Buffalo (three appearances) and Tampa Bay (five appearances) in 2024. He now reunites with the Chiefs on a one-year deal, where Steve Spagnuolo's defense is at least familiar. With both Bryan Cook and second-year safety Jaden Hicks entrenched atop the depth chart, though, Edwards is primed to enter 2025 in merely a depth role. Read Past Outlooks

Edwards is slated to sign a one-year deal with the Chiefs, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
After playing five games with Tampa Bay and three with Buffalo during the 2024 regular season, a span in which he recorded 12 tackles, Edwards returns to Kansas City, where spent the 2023 campaign and logged 51 tackles over the course of 17 regular-season outings. In his return to the Chiefs, Edwards -- a 2019 third-rounder -- will add depth and experience to a safety corps that will be minus Justin Reid, who signed with the Saints last month.

At this point in his career Edwards is a proven commodity and a solid contributor from the free safety position. A third-round pick by Tampa Bay in 2019, Edwards played out his four-year rookie contract with the Bucs, while seeing a notable uptick in productivity (82 tackles in just 13 games) in Year 4. Following his lone season in Kansas City, Edwards will now have a chance to become a key cog in Buffalo's re-tooled safety corps.
Edwards signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs this offseason after spending the first four years of his career in Tampa Bay. The veteran had a strong season in 2022, recording a career-high 82 tackles, a sack, three pass deflections and two interceptions over 13 games. Edwards figures to be a key depth piece at safety for the 2023 campaign.
A third-round pick out of Kentucky, Edwards brings versatility to the Buccaneers secondary. The rookie is capable of playing either corner or safety, and his impressive college resume speaks to his all-around skill set. Edwards finished his four-year Wildcats career with 317 tackles (190 solo and 21 for loss), 10 interceptions (including two pick-sixes), 23 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Edwards clearly has the potential to compile impressive IDP numbers in a full-time role, but that opportunity isn't likely to be within reach to open his first season unless projected starting strong safety Justin Evans remains hampered by the toe injury that shortened his 2018 campaign.

Competing for job against rookie
SBuffalo Bills
June 30, 2024
Eric Edholm of NFL.com views 2024 second-round pick Cole Bishop as Buffalo's potential starter at free safety over Edwards.
ANALYSIS
Edwards signed a one-year contract with the Bills in hopes of returning to a starting role after playing a part-time role in Kansas City's championship-winning secondary last season. Bishop is challenging Edwards for the free safety spot next to starting strong safety Taylor Rapp, and Edwards' bid to impress his new team's coaching staff has been hampered by a shoulder injury, which kept the veteran safety out of OTAs and limited his participation during minicamp.
