2024 Fantasy Outlook
Mullens returns for his third season in Minnesota, backing up Sam Darnold after first-round pick J.J. McCarthy suffered a season-ending knee injury in August. Mullens was his typical mediocre self in five games (three starts) after Kirk Cousins suffered a season-ending injury last year, averaging 8.8 YPA but throwing eight interceptions. Mullens has been better at boosting his receiver's stats than he is at winning games -- dating back to his time in San Francisco -- with his aggressive approach typically producing a lot of yardage and a lot of turnovers. The problem is that the interceptions usually get him benched, and he doesn't add any rushing production (22 career yards, zero TDs) in the meantime. Read Past Outlooks

Delivers critical completion in win
Mullens played two of the Vikings' 71 offensive snaps in Sunday's 30-27 overtime win over the Bears, completing his lone pass attempt for a 14-yard gain.
ANALYSIS
For the first time since Week 5, Mullens was summoned from the bench to replace Sam Darnold, who walked off the field slowly after taking a hit on an incomplete pass on 2nd-and-13 with 6:32 remaining in the fourth quarter. Mullens came in on third down and found an open Aaron Jones in the middle of the field to extend the drive, then handed the ball off to Jones on the next play before Darnold was cleared to return to the game. Darnold was able to finish out the game and doesn't appear on the Vikings' Week 13 injury report, so Mullens looks poised to remain in a backup role moving forward. He may not be the top choice if Darnold were to miss time with an injury later on this season, however, as the Vikings signed Daniel Jones to their practice squad Wednesday and presumably view him as an upgrade over Mullens for the No. 2 role.

The Raiders traded Mullens to the Vikings last August, with the quarterback serving as the primary reserve to Kirk Cousins during the 2022 season. Undrafted back in 2017, Mullens ended up appearing in four games in mop-up duty and completed 21 of 25 passes for 224 yards, one touchdown and one interception. While those are not overly impressive numbers, he demonstrated he's at least a steady hand as the backup.

Mullens will not lose his No. 2 quarterback job for the time being despite the Vikings' addition of Daniel Jones on Wednesday, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mullens put together some noteworthy performances down the stretch last season after Kirk Cousins went down with a torn Achilles, and he's a reasonably capable veteran with 32 games of NFL experience under his belt. While Jones certainly has more pedigree, Mullens is now in his third year in head coach Kevin O'Connell's offense, giving him quite the edge on Jones, who'll open his Vikings tenure on the practice squad.
