Competing for backup job
Howell will compete for the No. 2 job behind Sam Darnold after the Seahawks signed Drew Lock on Friday, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
ANALYSIS
GM John Schneider added that he looks forward to Howell's development in the new scheme after the Seahawks fired OC Ryan Grubb after just one season and replaced him with Klint Kubiak. Schneider also stated that Lock's arrival doesn't mean the team won't add another quarterback during the draft. Howell played just 25 snaps during 2024, completing five of 14 passes for 24 yards and an interception. Such a small sample size isn't determinative of Howell's future, however, as he was a serviceable option in Washington in 2023 with 3,946 yards, 21 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in addition to five rushing scores. Meanwhile, Lock's career numbers aren't much better, but he has familiarity with the organization and may be a more steady backup as the Seahawks look to perform a quick rebuild with Darnold's lead.

Howell ended up starting 17 games for Washington last year only because backup Jacoby Brissett injured his hamstring the week Howell was to be benched late in the season. Howell was actually a competent No. 2 fantasy QB the first half of the season, and even in Weeks 11-13 when he had 1:5 TD:INT he stayed afloat with four rushing touchdowns. But the last four games were especially dreadful -- three TDs, seven INTs, 4.7 YPA -- and sealed his fate with the Commanders. He was the only QB in the league with at least 14 starts who failed to throw more touchdowns than interceptions (21:21). The Seahawks traded for Howell in March to back up Geno Smith, which seems like an appropriate spot for the 2022 fifth-round pick. At 6-1, 220, with an above-average arm, Howell could again be useful in two-QB leagues should Smith go down, as the Seahawks have a nice group of playmakers in DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Kenneth Walker.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Lock arrival could lead to exit
Howell's chances of sticking on the Seahawks' 2025 roster may have lessened with the signing of Drew Lock to a two-year contract Friday, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com suggests.
ANALYSIS
Lock signed a two-year deal worth $5 million Friday after also spending the 2022 and 2023 seasons in Seattle. A new offense arrived with the changing of the coaching staff a season ago, but Howell appeared to have trouble grasping it during the offseason and then completed only 37.5 percent of his passes for 24 yards while also throwing an interception in his only regular-season appearance in 2024. Henderson notes the Seahawks are eyeing several of the second- and third-tier quarterback prospects in the upcoming NFL Draft as well, another sign Howell may be hard-pressed to make the team heading into the 2025 regular season.
