With a void at defensive end, the Colts traded cornerback Rock Ya-Sin to Oakland for Ngakoue to improve their pass rush. Ngakoue offers a nice floor as a pass rusher with eight or more sacks in each of his six seasons, including 10 last season with Las Vegas. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
Ngakoue provided solid returns for the Colts after he was acquired via trade from Las Vegas last offseason. The 27-year-old pass-rushing specialist dealt with a nagging back injury to begin the season, though he still finished with a team high in sacks despite also missing the last two regular-season games on injured reserve with a throat injury. The 2017 Pro Bowler has now accumulated 65 sacks over seven seasons in the NFL. This campaign also completed a two-year, $26 million deal that Ngakoue originally penned with the Raiders, so he'll become an unrestricted free agent unless the Colts work out a new deal with him this offseason.

Ngakoue hasn't made a Pro Bowl since 2017, but he's recorded at least eight sacks during each of his first five seasons in the NFL. The former Jaguar bounced around from Minnesota to Baltimore in 2020, but the Raiders sought Ngakoue out in free agency and ultimately dealt him a two-year contract worth $26 million to bolster their pass rush, which has been a major weakness.
The Jaguars applied the franchise tag to Ngakoue in March, but the draft came and went without a trade and the two sides entered a stalemate. The 2016 third-round pick -- who has 37.5 sacks and 14 forced fumbles through four seasons -- has been public with his displeasure with Jacksonville's front office, making it difficult to imagine him suiting up for the team again. However, if a trade isn't reached he may find himself in the position of having to decide between absorbing a lost season, or biting the bullet and making the best of the situation. In any event, the Jags already selected his potential replacement K'Lavon Chaisson with the 20th overall pick in April's draft.
Ngakoue skipped minicamp in June and remained away from the Jaguars for the early part of training camp due to his contract situation, but he ultimately joined the team in early August. The 24-year-old posted 9.5 sacks in 16 games in 2018, but he was unable to replicate the playmaking ability from the previous two seasons when he forced 10 fumbles. Ngakoue has only 81 tackles (69 solo) through his first three seasons and could significantly increase his IDP value if he can become more of a factor against the run.
Ngakoue followed up a fantastic rookie season with a 12-sack campaign in 2017, and now has 20 sacks and 10 forced fumbles over his first two seasons. Even more impressive is that the 23-old-year was largely feast or famine in 2017, recording a sack in only seven games and having six games where he tallied one or zero tackles. Ngakoue, a 2016 third-round pick, could be in store for an even better season for Jacksonville's top-tier defense if he can exhibit a bit more consistency in his third season.
A third-round selection in 2016, Ngakoue was a pleasant surprise as a rookie, racking up a team-best 8.0 sacks and routinely outperforming 2015 No. 3 overall pick Dante Fowler. While Fowler will be given every opportunity to prove his worth, Ngakoue will be breathing down Fowler's neck for snaps. The young duo will team with veteran free agent addition Calais Campbell in what's expected to be an improved group of edge-rushers. In 2016, the Jaguars tied for 19th in the league in total sacks (33.0), while forcing an AFC-low 13 takeaways.
