Takes every rep Wednesday
KWashington Commanders
January 15, 2025
Gonzalez (hip) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Gonzalez was listed as a limited participant Tuesday on Washington's first injury report of the week, but his ability to take every rep a day later clears up any concern about his status for Saturday's divisional-round game in Detroit. After connecting on five of seven field-goal attempts and 19 of 19 extra-point tries over his six appearances with Washington in the regular season, Gonzalez went a perfect 5-for-5 on kicks in this past Sunday's wild-card win over the Buccaneers. He nailed two point-after attempts and all three of his field goals, including a 37-yarder that clanged off the right upright and in for the game-winning points with no time remaining.

The 49ers traded with the Panthers for Gonzalez this offseason after Robbie Gould declined to re-sign with the team. The former appeared set to take over as the team's kicker, but San Francisco then used a third-round pick on Jake Moody during this year's draft. It would be foolish for the front office to burn such a high pick on a player they don't plan on keeping past training camp, so Gonzalez may find himself on yet another team by Week 1.
Gonzalez took over the starting job Week 2 last season and immediately buoyed a Carolina kicking unit that had been problematic in recent years. The veteran converted 20 of 22 attempts before hurting his leg in Week 15 pre-game warmups - an injury that cost him the final four games. Gonzalez has only had two seasons with a field-goal percentage higher than 80, so he'll have to prove last year wasn't a small-sample fluke. Unfortunately, he may not have that chance this year, as he suffered a groin injury in the Panthers' preseason finale and was placed on injured reserve shortly thereafter.
Kliff Kingsbury's offense didn't do much for David Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald in 2019, but it did produce the fifth-ranked fantasy kicker, thanks to red-zone struggles and a barrage of chip-shot FGs. Gonzalez led the league in attempts from 30-39 yards and tied for the lead from 20-29. He'll probably trade some of those easy three-pointers for PATs in 2020 but should also see more chances from distance.
Cut by Cleveland two games into his second season, Gonzalez was signed to Arizona's practice squad last year before joining the roster. The sample is still limited, but career conversion rates of 70.6 percent for field goals and 89.2 percent for extra points don't inspire confidence. While Arizona's offense should be improved, there's no way to know if Gonzalez will even have the job for Week 1.
Drafted in Round 7 last year, Gonzalez was granted a developmental season along with the rest of the perpetually rebuilding Cleveland roster, facing no real threat to his job despite missing one-fourth of his attempts. He converted 25 of 26 extra-point tries, and made eight of nine field-goal attempts after Week 8. The Browns would need massive improvement just to bring Gonzalez to the edge of fantasy relevance.
Selected in the seventh round of this year's draft, Gonzalez is expected to compete with Cody Parkey for the starting job. Parkey was solid in 14 games with the Browns last year, connecting on 80 percent of his 25 attempts, though his 21 PAT attempts (he made 20) left him as the lowest-scoring kicker among those who made as many appearances. Regardless of who wins the job, the Browns' kicker isn't likely to be a strong fantasy option this year given the team's expected struggles offensively.

Gonzalez was one of four kickers to try out for the Giants on Monday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
New York needs a replacement kicker after Graham Gano suffered a hamstring strain on the opening kickoff Sunday, and the team's inability to kick extra points or field goals led directly to a 21-18 loss to the Commanders. Gano is expected to miss multiple weeks. The 29-year-old Gonzalez last kicked in the NFL in 2021, converting 20 of 22 field goals and 22 of 23 extra points over 12 games for the Panthers.
