Stadler really shouldn't be here. But we really like telling his story. He has been on a major medical extension for so long that his is still tied to money earned, a component long ago ended by the Tour but grandfathered in. Stadler has just one start left to earn in excess of 438 points or $685,000. So that one tournament better be a good one, Kev. Perhaps Stadler will pick Phoenix, site of his lone PGA Tour win in 2014.
Stadler has not been seen or heard from since 2014-15, when he went down with a left hand injury. Who knows when/if he'll be back, but if that happens, he'll be under a major medical extension, with 26 events to earn 454.420 points or $717,890. That's a tall task, and that doesn't even take into account that he can no longer anchor his putter. He was a terrible putter without anchoring, and not great with it.
Stadler's been on the PGA Tour since 2007, but he's never had a season like he did last year. Not only did he gain his first victory on the PGA Tour, but he also cracked the $2 million mark for the first time. Considering his previous high in earnings was $1.5 million, it's hard to imagine he can significantly improve upon his earnings number of $2.3 million from last year. He's not going to be a good option in salary cap leagues this year, but he should be drafted in the 4th or 5th round.
Stadler started the 2013 well with a T3 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February and he closed with another T3 at the Deutsche Bank late in the year, but he didn't get much done in-between. Stadler has some upside, but we've said that for the past few seasons and he's been unable to break out of this range. Expect another finish in his range on the money list in 2014. Stadler is not a good salary cap option, this year and expect him to go in the 70-80 range in drafts.
Stadler had a banner year in 2012 as he surpassed $1 million for the first time in his career while posting a career-high five top-10s. Stadler is a workhorse; he's going to play a lot this year just like he has the last few years, which means plenty of opportunity. He might not break the bank, but with so many opportunities to earn money, he's bound to find some top-10s along the way. To improve last year's earnings, though, he'll need to turn some of those top-10s into top-5s. As long as he continues his progression, he should do just that. He's worth a look in salary cap leagues and worth a sixth-round pick in draft leagues.
Son of Walrus hasn't quite found the success that his dad had on the PGA Tour, but if he keeps earning his card year after year, he'll have plenty of opportunities to accomplish some good things. The problem with the younger Stadler is that he's done little with his card after he's earned it. Stadler collected only one Top-10 last year. To his credit, though, he didn't just rack up money during the fall season; he made most of his money during summer.
Stadler had a decent rookie season in 2007, but his follow-up campaign left him outside the top 125. After regaining his card for 2009, he improved his play and once again secured his card for 2010. He again played well enough to retain playing privileges last season, but at some point we'll need to see a little more from Stadler if he is to be relevant on the PGA TOUR. With the exception of driving accuracy, Stadler's stats are generally solid. He improved his putting last season, and if that trend continues, he may be able to take a significant jump in earnings this season.
Stadler did not live up to the hype in his first three seasons on the PGA TOUR, and he did not take big enough steps last season to indicate that 2010 will be any different. Stadler still has plenty of potential, but he will need to work on his putting if he hopes to move up the money list in 2010.
Stadler caught fire in August last season which insured that he would have his card for 2008, but he has to deal with a consistency problem. A breakout year is probably in his future, but it isn't going to happen this year. Putting is a major problem for him right now, and he needs to address that if he's going to stay on the PGA Tour.
