Spivac defeated Marcin Tybura via submission (armbar) at 1:44 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Spivac dropped a unanimous decision to Tybura when the two first fought back in February 2020. He got his revenge on this evening in a major way. Serghei landed an immediate takedown, but he quickly found himself planted on his back. Seemingly at a massive disadvantage, Spivac just rotated his hips, and with Tybura unable to adjust, grabbed ahold of his arm and quickly earned the stoppage. It was a slick move, but one that should never happen at this level given the dominant position Tybura found himself in. Most of the wins have come against lower-level competition, but Spivac is now 7-2 in his last nine bouts dating back to July 2020. The two defeats over that span came against Ciryl Gane and Tom Aspinall. He'll get another ranked fighter his next time out, but in the meantime, Spivac will walk away with one of three $50,000 Performance of the Night bonuses awarded on the evening.

He seemingly had a real chance to win this fight if he was able to drag Gane to the mat, but Spivac attempted just one takedown the entire fight, and even that was of the token variety. Instead, he was content exchanging strikes with Gane . He was predictably and quickly overwhelmed in the process. It was all very strange. Spivac entered having won six of seven, but the five victories other than his recent submission of Derrick Lewis all came against lower-end competition (Augusto Sakai, Greg Hardy, Aleksei Oleinik, Jared Vanderaa, Carlos Felipe). Although just 28 years old, this may have been Spivac's last real chance to make a run at heavyweight.
