Ulanbekov lost to Kyoji Horiguchi via submission (rear-naked choke) at 2:18 of Round 3 at UFC Qatar on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Ulanbekov entered this matchup on a four-fight winning streak as a betting favorite of roughly (-235), but he quickly found out that his opponent was still as effective as ever, even at the age of 35. Ulanbekov got literally nothing going offensively, as he was taken down and controlled heavily in all three rounds before Horiguchi found the fight-ending choke. He managed just six significant strikes in the 12-plus minutes the bout lasted. It's now back to the drawing board for the Dagestan-based flyweight.

Looks to stay hot vs. Horiguchi
FlyweightUFC
October 2, 2025
Ulanbekov will take on Kyoji Horiguchi in a flyweight bout at UFC Qatar on Nov. 22, per Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
Ulanbekov is red hot in the UFC right now. He's won four straight bouts, with his most recent victory coming against Azat Maksum via unanimous decision in June. That pushed his record in the promotion to 6-1, and he'll look to add to that sparkling resume against a fighter in Horiguchi who hasn't fought in the UFC since 2016, but has a 7-1 record in the promotion.
Picks up fourth straight win
FlyweightUFC
June 21, 2025
Ulanbekov defeated Azat Maksum via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Baku, Azerbaijan.
ANALYSIS
It was an underwhelming performance from Ulanbekov from start to finish and one in which he was lucky to win as a -500 favorite. A grappler by trade, Tagir failed on all eight of his takedown attempts. He was able to use his upper-body strength to pin Maksum along the fence for long stretches at a time, but he landed very little offense from that position. Ulanbekov closed with a 68-62 edge in significant strikes landed. It was a much closer result than the scorecards indicate. Tagir has won four in a row and six of seven with the UFC, meaning he's on the verge of earning some important fights in a thin flyweight division.
New opponent for UFC Baku

May 19, 2025
Ulanbekov is scheduled against Azat Maksum for a flyweight fight at UFC Baku on June 21, according to Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
For the Baku event, Ulanbekov's initial opponent was Kyoji Horiguchi (undisclosed). It is clear that an undisclosed problem caused him to withdraw from June 21's card. Ulanbekov's new opponent is looking to bounce back after an early-2024 loss to Charles Johnson.
Set to fight in Baku
FlyweightUFC
April 11, 2025
Ulanbekov will match up against Kyoji Horiguchi at UFC Baku on Jun. 21, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
The Russian flyweight will look to continue to ride the wave with a three-match win streak under his belt and five wins in his six UFC matchups. Ulanbekov will take on a newcomer in his Baku appearance, as Horoguchi has yet to see the Octagon at the UFC stage, but Horiguchi has spent many years as a champion in the overseas-based RIZIN promotion, in addition to fighting for the title under the Bellator banner.
Takes decision in UFC 311 opener
FlyweightUFC
January 18, 2025
Ulanbekov defeated Clayton Carpenter via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC 311 on Saturday in Los Angeles.
ANALYSIS
Fight fans get a wrestling-heavy game plan each and every time out from Ulanbekov, and this one was no exception. Neither man was able to make much headway on the feet, but Ulanbekov parlayed three takedowns and 6:49 worth of control time into his third straight victory. Now 5-1 in his first six UFC bouts, Ulanbekov has just one knockout victory in 18 professional fights, so the takedowns better keep coming if he plans on having continued success as he climbs up the 125-pound rankings.
