2025 Fantasy Outlook
Santana received a NRI from the Yankees last offseason, and while he didn't break camp with New York, he impressed during spring training and was recalled in early April. He spent two months in the Bronx, struggling to a 6.26 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 27.1 innings before he was DFA'd. The 28-year-old righty was claimed by Pittsburgh a few days later and changed his approach, throwing fewer sinkers (.279 BAA, .395 SLG) in favor of more fastballs (.196 BAA, .268 SLG). Santana was much better with the Pirates, even making 21 consecutive appearances without permitting an earned run. He finished the campaign with career-highs in innings pitched (71.2) and WHIP (1.09), the latter being a notable improvement over his 1.32 mark for his career. Santana should open 2025 as one of Pittsburgh's highest-leverage relievers, which may include save chances if David Bednar does not reclaim the closer role. Read Past Outlooks

Notches fifth save
Santana struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Wednesday to record his fifth save of the season in a 3-1 win over the Reds.
ANALYSIS
David Bednar worked Monday and Tuesday and collected the save in the latter game, leaving him unavailable Wednesday afternoon. Santana also worked the eighth inning Tuesday but was still fresh enough to remain a perfect 5-for-5 in converting save chances this season. Bednar appears to have inched back ahead in the pecking order for the Pirates' closer job, but Santana's 1.77 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 13:3 K:BB through 20.1 innings on the year will keep him firmly in the high-leverage mix.

After posting a 5.22 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 54 punchouts over 58.2 innings in 63 appearances with the Rangers last season, the reliever was dealt to Atlanta in November. He was later designated for assignment and claimed by the Twins. He'll try to wni a bullpen role this spring. Santana will likely operate in low-leverage situations out of the bullpen if he does make the major league roster.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Useful trade chip for Pirates?
Santana has put together an excellent season so far for the Pirates and could be among the names they look to move before the deadline, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Santana has found new life on the mound as a member of the Pirates. The 29-year-old righty was picked up by the Pirates last June after being DFA'd by the Yankees and has been nothing short of spectacular. Santana currently owns a 1.61 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 18:3 K:BB in 22.1 innings while picking up five saves and six holds. He figures to be a desirable option for teams looking to add pitching, as he's on a cheap salary and has one remaining year of arbitration.
