2025 Fantasy Outlook
Williams didn't make his season debut with the Guardians in July after working his way back from an elbow injury suffered during spring training. While the big right-hander never really got on a roll, he pitched better than his 4.86 ERA would suggest, as his 4.14 xERA, 4.19 SIERA and 3.67 FIP indicates. Williams' strikeout prowess in the minors (33.3 percent) has not yet carried over to the major-league level (23.6 percent), and his walk rate is hovering above 10 percent with the Guardians, as well. The 25-year-old seems to still be searching for the right pitch mix, as he introduced a cutter and used a curveball as his primary breaking ball in 2024 after a slider was his main breaking pitch in 2023. Williams' pedigree and the Guardians' pitching development track record points to the righty taking a step forward eventually, and perhaps as soon as 2025. Read Past Outlooks

Struggles with control in loss
Williams (4-3) took the loss against the Dodgers on Monday, allowing four runs on four hits and six walks while striking out three batters over 4.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Williams' outing began ominously when Shohei Ohtani laced his first pitch to right field for a home run. That ended up being the only extra-base hit Williams allowed, but his struggles for the remainder of his time in the game were mostly centered on his control -- he issued a season-high six free passes and needed 109 pitches to get through 4.2 frames, with just 66 of his offerings being strikes. The control issues are nothing new for Williams, as he now leads the majors with 32 free passes allowed on the season. He's offered glimpses of excellence, especially with his 60 punchouts through 52.2 frames, and he racked up an impressive 15 whiffs Monday. However, Williams' WHIP stands at an inflated 1.58 due largely to the control issues, and his 4.27 ERA is well below league-average.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Williams opened the season in Double-A Akron but pushed his way into Cleveland's rotation by mid-June and remained there for the rest of the season. The apex of his season was consecutive double-digit strikeout games against Toronto and Tampa Bay in early August while the only true disastrous outing was one against the Dodgers later that month. The complaint with the rookie would be walks as he had four walks in five of his 16 outings but Williams also benefited from stranding runners in those outings as none of the five were terrible outings. We could also nitpick at him only going six or more innings in 5 of his 16 outings which made it tougher for him to net wins and quality starts. Cleveland has an excellent track record of pitching development and they'll no doubt continue to mold Williams into the front half of the rotation pitcher they envision him to be. That project just may not be completed in 2024.
