2025 Fantasy Outlook
Romero landed on the 15-day injured list during the final week of the regular season due to left forearm inflammation. As long as he can avoid setbacks, it would appear he is in line for his normal offseason routine. The 28-year-old southpaw is coming off his finest campaign to date, establishing new career-highs in games played (65), innings pitched (59) and wins (7). He was eighth in the league with 30 holds while posting solid ratios as the top lefty out of the Cardinals bullpen. Romero figures to reprise that same role in 2025 and could even earn save opportunities if St. Louis trades closer Ryan Helsley. However, looking under the hood, there isn't much in Romero's profile that is terribly exciting. Read Past Outlooks

Top candidate for saves with Cards
Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak indicated Thursday that Romero is the top candidate to take over the team's closer role following the trade of Ryan Helsley, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Manager Oliver Marmol has the ultimate say, and it's possible he'll have a different of opinion than Mozeliak, but Romero is the most logical candidate to see save chances after the departure of Helsley and Phil Maton. Romero has been the club's top left-handed setup man for most of the season and has permitted only one earned run with a 28:8 K:BB over 25 innings since the start of May. Riley O'Brien and Kyle Leahy could be the top options from the right side for save opportunities if Marmol wants to play matchups.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2021
Romero was unable to win a spot in the Cardinals' bullpen to open the 2023 season, but managed to rapidly ascend the team's late-inning hierarchy upon his recall in early July. The 27-year-old even earned some looks as St. Louis' closer, logging three saves in 27 appearances before left knee tendinitis ended his season in September. While Romero primarily throws a mid-90's sinker to induce ground balls at a near-60 percent clip, he keeps hitters off-balance with an 86 mph changeup (45.3 percent whiff). Not to mention, the southpaw's 53.2 percent whiff rate on his slider was one of the highest in the league for that pitch type. This helped him produce above-average strikeout (28.6%) and walk (6.8%) rates, even if the sample was only 36.2 innings. Romero showed enough last year to continue to fill a high-leverage role for the Cardinals in 2024, but health has been an issue for him throughout his career.

Drawing trade interest
Romero is receiving trade interest, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Romero is under team control next season, so the Cardinals are less motivated to deal him than they are impending free agents Ryan Helsley, Phil Maton and Steven Matz. However, they will listen to offers for the left-handed Romero, who has allowed just one earned run with a 29:9 K:BB over his last 25.1 innings.
