2026 Fantasy Outlook
After finishing third in the league with 38 saves in 2024, Finnegan was non-tendered by the Nationals last offseason so the team could avoid giving him a raise in salary arbitration. However, the market for the right-hander was dry and he re-upped with Washington on a 1-year deal for lesser money. Finnegan once again dominated the team save share to open 2025, recording 20 of the Nats' first 21 saves (95 percent team save share) before he was traded to Detroit at the deadline. He picked up four more saves down the stretch for the Tigers, finishing with 24 overall between the two clubs. While Finnegan has finished among the top-15 in saves for three straight years, his prospects to extend that streak in 2026 are currently unclear. The 34-year-old free-agent missed time late last season due to an adductor strain and lost a tick of velocity on his four-seam fastball. 20-plus saves are possible, but Finnegan needs to sign first before we can safely project his role. Finnegan has allowed two runs on three hits and a walk across 1.2 innings since coming off the injured list Friday.
Analysis
After missing nearly a month due to a right groin strain, Finnegan has made two relief appearances, and he's been scored on each time. In Tuesday's loss to the Guardians, the righty came on in the seventh inning with an inherited runner on first and promptly allowed a double and a single to plate two Cleveland runs. Finnegan logged 12 straight scoreless outings for the Tigers before going down with his injury, so he may simply be dealing with some rust, but he should still see high-leverage work in the last few games of the regular season as Detroit fights for a playoff spot.

Even though his metrics weren't eye-popping, Finnegan maintained higher stability than expected as the Nationals' closer, racking up a career-high 38 saves (third in the league) with a 95 percent team save share that was highest among closers. Somehow, the right-hander just kept getting the job done in the ninth inning despite giving up a ton of hard contact -- his 91.3 mph average exit velocity was a bottom-one percent of MLB -- and allowing plenty of traffic on the bases. His 1.34 WHIP ranked 18th out of the 20 closers who recorded 20-plus saves. Finnegan is coming off his first All-Star selection, but he's currently a free agent after Washington non-tendered him. He should draw plenty of interest due to his high-leverage experience, but closing is no guarantee.
