Kyle Finnegan

Kyle Finnegan

31-Year-Old PitcherRP
Washington Nationals
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Finnegan's 2022 season was basically a carbon copy of the year prior with some slight improvements. For starters, he added velocity on his sinker, a pitch he threw 79% of the time at 97 mph on average, compared to 95.6 mph in 2021. This yielded a career-best 26.1% strikeout rate, while his walk rate dropped a few percentage points to 8.2%. Finnegan also established career marks with a 1.14 WHIP, six wins and 14 holds, while tying a career high with 11 saves after Nationals' closer Tanner Rainey had season-ending Tommy John surgery. He maintained his reverse splits, performing better against lefty swingers (.185 BA since 2020) compared to right-handed batters (.273). Washington is very clearly in rebuild mode, so don't count on many save chances after the team finished with a league-low 28 saves in 2022. However, if Finnegan maintains the closer role in 2023 and holds it all season, he makes for a fine CL2. Read Past Outlooks

Not guaranteed closer role
PWashington Nationals
March 15, 2023
Finnegan was told early in the spring by manager Dave Martinez that he could be used in more of a fireman role rather than being limited to the ninth inning, Bobby Blanco of MASN reports.
ANALYSIS
"I talked to [Finnegan] already and I told him, 'Hey, look, there's gonna be days where you close. There's gonna be days where I feel like the eighth inning is where we need you the most,'" Martinez said in early March. "His response was, 'Hey, whenever you need me, I'll be ready.' I love that about him." Finnegan has collected 11 saves in each of the last two seasons and remains the most likely Washington reliever to crack double digits in 2023, but other options like Alex Colome, Hunter Harvey, Carl Edwards, Sean Doolittle (elbow) and Mason Thompson could also find themselves in the closer mix depending on matchups and performance.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2021
After finally debuting when he was 28 years old on 2020, Finnegan began the season in the Nationals bullpen, collecting 11 holds in his first 40 innings despite walking 21 batters, fueling a 1.50 WHIP. Finnegan minimized damage with 44 punch outs and only four homers allowed in that span, generating a 3.37 ERA. The Nationals dealt Brad Hand and gave ninth inning duties to Finnegan. He responded with 11 saves in 14 chances, adding two more holds. His WHIP was similar, but 5 homers in his last 26 innings pushed his ERA to 3.83 in that span. His 3.55 season long ERA was a run lower that the various estimators. Even so, as the incumbent, Finnegan has the inside track to return as Washington's closer, though his career 11.7% BB% suggests his job security wouldn't be very high, and he'll need to beat out Tanner Rainey, Steve Cishek and Sean Doolittle for the job.
Finnegan had a breakout year in the minors in 2019, which he credited to lowering his arm slot. He finally got his chance at the major-league level in 2020 and pitched well, with a 25.2 K% leading to a .226 BAA. The right-hander is no spring chicken at 29 years old, and walks remain an issue, so it would be a surprise if he leapfrogged a handful of other capable arms in the Nationals' bullpen.
