2025 Fantasy Outlook
Even though his metrics weren't eye-popping, Finnegan maintained higher stability than expected as the Nationals' closer, racking up a career-high 38 saves (third in the league) with a 95 percent team save share that was highest among closers. Somehow, the right-hander just kept getting the job done in the ninth inning despite giving up a ton of hard contact -- his 91.3 mph average exit velocity was a bottom-one percent of MLB -- and allowing plenty of traffic on the bases. His 1.34 WHIP ranked 18th out of the 20 closers who recorded 20-plus saves. Finnegan is coming off his first All-Star selection, but he's currently a free agent after Washington non-tendered him. He should draw plenty of interest due to his high-leverage experience, but closing is no guarantee. Read Past Outlooks

Faces hitters Friday
Finnegan faced hitters on a back field Friday afternoon, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander didn't re-sign with Washington until late February, putting Finnegan behind the team's other relievers, and Friday was the first time he'd seen game action in any setting this spring. He tossed 22 pitches and worked in the mid-90s with his fastball, suggesting he's close to ready for a Grapefruit League appearance. Finnegan recorded a career-high 38 saves in 2024, and he'll head into Opening Day back in the ninth-inning role for the Nats.

2021
Finnegan was 14th in the majors with a career-high 28 saves for the Nationals, which represented a 66.7% team save share. The 32-year-old pitched a career-high 69.1 innings, but he may have run out of gas down the stretch as he posted a 7.63 ERA and 1.89 WHIP over the last month-and-a-half. His performance otherwise (2.55 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) was solid and he was Washington's highest leveraged reliever per WPA (1.88) and gmLI (1.90). Finnegan still relied heavily on his upper-90's fastball (70% usage), but he threw more split fingers (24.8%) since it was his most successful pitch (.167 BAA, 35.3% whiff) last year. However, the right-hander produced a career-worst strikeout rate (21.7%) and permitted 11 home runs (17.7% HR/FB%). With the Nationals playing more competitive ball, they may turn to a reliever with more upside for ninth inning duties. They have a few internal options (Harvey, Rainey), so don't be surprised if Finnegan gets fewer save opportunities in 2024.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Market heating up
Finnegan's market has picked up significantly, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The relief pitcher market is finally moving and Finnegan is another notable name who could find a new home soon. He was surprisingly non-tendered by the Nationals earlier this offseason after collecting a 3.68 ERA and 60:24 K:BB over 63.2 innings while recording 38 saves in 2024. Finnegan is better cast as a middle reliever, but it's possible he'll land somewhere where he's in the mix for saves.
